Are there any good books?

What are some good fantasy / science fiction, and/or fiction books?

  • I'm looking for some good books to read. I'm 17 and a pretty avid reader. I have read a lot of the mainstream stuff, I've read The Wheel of Time series, Malazan Book of the Fallen, all of Jim Butcher's books, all of Simon .R Green's books, The Sword of Truth series, all of Anne Rice's Books, A Song of Ice and Fire, all of Andy Remic's book's, and all of David Gunn's books, the Dragon Lance chronicles, the Drizzit Do'Urden books, all of Harry Turtledove's Books, the 1632 series, The Book of the New Sun, All of Neil Gaiman's books and countless more that I probably can't remember. And finally please don't say "Twilight" or the "Harry Potter series", as I read them long ago and I while I did like them at the time, I now find them boring.

  • Answer:

"The Saga of Recluse" is a great series of fantasy novels written by L.E. Modesitt Jr

It sounds like you've been through every paperback fantasy in the library, but I think I have a few to add. First, "Enders Game" by Orson Scott Card. It has to be the most brilliant science fiction book I have ever read. Second, "The Six of Swords." I can't remember the author, and the diction is a bit flowery, but the plot is solid and the imagery is to die for. Since you've read Neil Gaiman, you've probably already discovered Terry Pratchet, but if you haven't, look up "Small Gods". It's part of his Discworld series, but it stands alone. Most of Pratchet's other books are just as good but, as you value your sanity, avoid "The Color of Magic." It was his first novel, written before he knew how to write. I'm certain you already know most of Douglas Adams, but you probably haven't come across "Dirk Gently's Holistic Dectective Agency" yet, since it's pretty obscure. I'll also say it's the best of his books. If you liked the Dragonlance chronicals, look up "The Night of the Eye." It's much better than the title would imply: it's set in the north of Krynn, and explores much deeper into the nature of magic than Weis and Hickman ever dared to peer. So, read and enjoy! And when you're done, tell me what you thought of them!

I recommend anything by Anne McCaffery, she does fantastic sci-fi fantasy. Mercedes Lackey, again for sci-fi/fantasy. The Graveyard Book is an excellent short read, its meant for YA but it is so good. It won the Newbery award last year.

While my books are relatively unpublished--still working on that angle--I have some science-fiction/fantasy books that you might find enjoyable. Your vast reading library suggests to me that these books of mine will be up your alley. None of them are mainstream and they have nothing in common with Twilight or Harry Potter. They deal with post-apocalyptic futures--none of them pretty--but they read like a movie playing inside your head. And they are rather large. Between 1200 and 1400 pages for a few, 400-600 pages for the smaller ones. :0) Let me know if you're interested. My e-mail is: [email protected]
