How do I get to Mt. Doom?

LotR Q: Is it ever mentioned about Sauron being so close to Mt. Doom?

  • I've always wondered if anyone in the books thought, it's going to be very tricky walking right passed the eye to get to mt. doom, also were there not any other volcanoes or did it have to be that specific one anyway because it was made there?

  • Answer:

Everybody thought the plan was insane and almost certain to fail, but the other options were even worse. There may have been other volcanoes in Middle Earth, but Mount Doom is the only one mentioned. I think early on in the book, Gandalf mentions to Frodo that a dragon's fire might be hot enough to destroy the Ring, but of course there aren't any left, not since Uncle Bilbo helped to kill the last of the them...

Of course they thought it was tricky! It was a huge quest which they knew was going to be an incredibly strenuous task, but it had to be destroyed in mount doom from whence it came.
