How Should You Read For The Children?

How should I read to children?

  • In a matter of months, I will begin volunteer hours at the local library and one of the tasks I can do is read to children. Is there any specific way I should read to them, hand gestures for specific parts, etc?

  • Answer:

Don't use a monotone voice. Use expression when ypu speek, varied tone, and immitate character's voices when you read in quotations. Smile. Speak slowly and clearly. Don't just read straight from the book. Look at them and make eye contact from time to time. After book ask them questions about it. Did you like it? How did ______ make you feel? Etc.

Do the voices.

It depends on the children, but I've found that most of them hate when people read in a monotone so keep your voice lively. I like to do a different, often ridiculous voice for each character to make them laugh, but if you're not good at that sort of thing they won't mind, just sound enthusiastic. If the book has pictures, make sure to show them to the children when you're finished reading each page. Good luck, I hope you enjoy your work at the library :)

I'm a Teacher's Assistant at my school's elementary school. I TA for the third grade. The slower readers tend to read at a pace way slower than they talk and they stumble over words they use everyday. So when I read with them, I read the first page, then let them read. I try to read at the pace at which I speak and not stumble over words and use a lot of emotion. That's how kids like to be read to. Even now that I'm older, I like when people read a book to me with tons of emotion of do different voices for the characters. You should try reading to them with emotion and do funny voices and make sure to explain big words and topics they may not know about. This is a learning experience for both you and the kids, you just need to make sure to keep their attenion. So: Give each character a unique voice, use emotion, read at a constant pace, explain complicated topics, and keep their attenion! Good luck and sorry for the long paragraph.

Depends on the book and the children! I generally stick to doing the voices and just generally reading in an engaging way, but if you feel a part merits hand movements, go for it!

The important part is to read with ton's of inflection and do funny voices for all the characters. You have to act as well as read. Don't bother with hand motions.

If they are young children they like it if you put on voices for different characters.
