From what nation did the Dutch provinces within the Union of Utrecht declare their Independence in 1581?

Why is Israel a nation?

  • So, I didn't realize until just a few years ago that Israel was a relatively new nation. When I found out we didn't have a "Jewish nation" before 1950ish, I thought it was odd in this modern era a religious nation could be created. As a remnant from the past, sure, it's understandable. But this was only sixty years ago. So, I'm trying to understand the context of this. I sort of read up on the history of it. From what I understand, the Ottomon Empire controlled the area. Then, for some reason that I don't fully understand yet, after WWI, it ended up in international hands? Why did the Ottomon Empire fall after WWI, was it an enemy of the Allies? Okay, so then we decide to put Britain in charge of the area that is Israel. They split it into two religious areas with Jerusalem being International ground. But the Jewish community decides to declare independence and makes all of Israel theirs. So, can anyone clear up the details, give me some perspective? How, why, etc.?

You are correct in that this is all to do with religion but the facts are complicated. In the 19th century a movement called Zionism grew in Europe among jews who believed that their sky god had given them the land of Palestine thousands of years ago, though if you read their holy books they record that even then they had to slaughter and displace the original inhabitants to get it. Palestine had been part of the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) since the 16th century and during that time christians, jews and muslims had lived there in harmony Then WW1 occurred between 1914 and 1918 with Turkey on the side of Germany. The British government was short of money to finance the war and went to international bankers to raise a loan. The banking system then was largely controlled by jews and the Zionists used the opportunity to extract a promise from the British Government. This is known as the Balfour Declaration and stated that in the event of Britain beating Turkey that Britain would establish a National Homeland for the jews in Palestine with the provision that it should not affect the civil or religious freedoms of the existing inhabitants. At the same time the British Government was making promises to the arabs to get their support in the fight against the Turks that they would receive their own self governing nations after the war. Turkey lost in 1918 and the Ottoman Empire ceased to exist Its teritories in the Middle East were divided between Britain and France under League of Nations Mandates. Britain got the Mandate to administer Palestine and started to allow the. entry of European jews on a strict annual rota. Before this the jews only formed 5% of the population. As the years passed the jews put pressure on the British to allow in more Europeans and the christian and muslim arabs were concerned that they were losing their land to these immigrants who were refusing to integrate but were setting up their own separate communities and squatting on empty land. This led to rioting which was brutally suppressed by the British, helped in many cases by the jews. WW2 occurred between 1939 and 1945 and many palestinians fought on the side of the British but the jews tended to get the better training and jobs because they were of European origin During this time some extreme Zionists formed the first jewish terror gangs and one of them murdered the British Minister to the Middle East (Lord Moyne ) in Cairo in 1940. After WW2 there were a lot of displaced European jews who attempted to enter Palestine in excess of the British agreed quota. The British tried unsuccessfully to keep them out. Some of these illegal immigrants formed terrorist gangs and began to attack the British administration and the local christians and muslims. They carried out many atrocities including the bombing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem in which over 90 people were killed and the murder of the UN representative , Count Bernadotte. They also took hostage British soldiers who they murdered whenever a jewish terrorist was executed. The British announced that they would give up their mandate in May 1948 and the jews increased their activity against the local population as the British military presence weakened. To stop the bloodshed the UN proposed to divide Palestine into an arab sector and a jewish sector. This was greeted with enthusiasm by the jews as it gave them a large slice of Palestine but rejected by the arabs who saw that they were losing much of their most productive land. The UN proposal was supported by Stalin who thought he was getting a socialist ally in the new jewish state as many of the terrorists were socialists and had been receiving armaments from communist Czechoslovakia. It was also supported by Truman who had an election coming up in the USA and the jewish vote there was always important, as it is today. Four weeks before the end of the British Mandate the jews launched an all out attack on the christians and muslims , seizing more land and massacring anyone who refused to leave. The displaced Palestinians fled to Jordan. Lebanon and Gaza where they have been living ever since as refugees. In May 1948 the jews proclaimed the new State of Israel and that was the end of peace in the Middle East. Many of the terrorists became ministers in the new government. Since then they have survived through a mixture of support from the USA and the stupidity and disunity of the surrounding Arab governments.

The Ottoman Empire failed during WWI. I'm not sure why that was. After WWI, England took over just about the whole Middle East as a 'protectorate' (read: Colony). This was when oil was just becoming valuable, and England wanted control of all the oil in the area. They redrew the entire map of the Middle East, for instance, giving what is now Saudi Arabia to the current royal family (the 'House of Saud') as their own property, in return for oil agreements. Well, after WWII, there were a lot of Jewish refugees from all over Europe, mostly Germany and Eastern Europe. They had nowhere to go and Britain and America didn't want to take them. So Britain got the idea of creating a nation for them in Palestine. Many Jews had lived in Palestine since ancient times. Israel was created mostly by European Jews. Some Jews (Orthodox and Hassidic Jews) didn't want the nation of Israel to be created because they believed it was only the Messiah who would lead Jews into their own nation. They didn't believe the state of Israel created by England was the one prophesied in the Bible. But also there had been a Zionist movement already for many years, of Jews around the world who wanted to take the ancient land of Israel back from the Arabs.

You are mistaken in one area. Israel may be the "Jewish state" but it is not a religious state, or more specifically, it is a democracy, not a theocracy. As was the case, there was a partition plan to divide the land into two states, a Jewish one and an Arab one, the general idea that that would have hopefully satisfied both sides. However, the Jews accepted the plan but the Arabs did not. When the British withdrew, Israel was declared a state and was attacked by many Arab armies. Their clear intention was to destroy the new Jewish state. They lost that war.

after ww2 israil was given isrial because no one wanted the Jews and because it was they're origianal homeland, ( ithink they were maybe forced out by palistine)if Britian was involed like that it was prolly just to keep order wile a goverment was officialy put in place i get what your saying in the second part, but isrial is not sending terrists out to kill everyone. Isrial is its own nation its not internation land. Austria-Hungery and the Ottoman Empire both cieced to exsist after ww2 and lots of little nations that previously were part of them became there own naions

ok, I suspect you are a relatively young person and can be forgiven a lack of understanding. A whole lot of people tried to keep the Zionists out of 'Israel' after the war, but no one wanted to do anything to help the Jewish survivors of the Holocaust who were rotting in camps in Europe, even though they were getting food and clothing and medical care. Picture a Europe today with a bunch of Gaza Strips, only these are full of Jews, not Arabs. There were, however, some very devoted people who helped move enough Jews to 'Israel' to permit them to begin organizing an armed force to protect themselves and to try to seize land to live on. The UN was brand new, and the Americans and British pretty much ruled the roost there. Americans wanted the Jews to have a homeland (lots of Jews in America with political power, even then), and the Brits didn't want to be seen as oppressors in the British Protectorate of Palestine. Europeans were willing to do anythng to get the Jews resettled, NIMBY. Because the Jews were forced to fight for their existance at first, and because Arab leaders were too short sighted to settle matters in 1948 with Jew and Arab living in side by side countries, there was the opportunity for the Arabs to try, several times to wipe out the Jews. The Jews proved to be great soldiers, even the women, and, instead of having to live with the little narrow strip of land they acquired in 1948, they were able to take territory from Arab attackers in the ensuing wars. They also became responsible for more and more refugees as a result of these Arab attacks, and have suffered ever since trying to find a way out. The solution has to be an overarching one that creates two countries, pays reparations to displaced Palestineans, and gets all the Arab countries to recognize Israel as a soverign state. If there were long term peace in the area, everyone would benefit enormously.

During the first century a series of Jewish revolts in Judea lead to the destruction of Herald's temple. massacres of Jews and a scattering of the Jewish population termed a diaspora. During the 19th century Zionism, a political movement was established with a goal of establishing a Jewish state in Palestine. Zionism isn't a religious movement. While Jews had always been in Palistine, the Zionists supported immigration, buying land and setting up communities. Turky rule Palestine until WWI when it sided with Germany. After the war, Palestine was taken from Turkey and placed under British mandate. In response to the Zionist movement Britain issued the Belfour Declaration in 1917 stated: "His Majesty's Government view with favor the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people, and will use their best endeavors to facilitate the achievement of this object..." "National home" could be nation or simply a place. Zionists took it to mean the former. Following WWII Britain mandate in Palestine was ending. Most British favored handing the area over to the Arab population. At the same time many of the survivors of the concentration camps and displaced people immigrated to Palestine. England made this illegal but many were smuggled in. The United Nations approved the creation of two states, Arab and Jewish. This was rejected by the Arab League but in May 1948 a provisional government established the state of Israel. The new nation was recognized by the United States and attacked by it's four Arab neighbors. The result of the war was that Israel increased it's border and many Arabs became refugees. The represent the Palestinians and exist in large camps today. End result was the secular state of Israel. Following the war there was a great return of Jews with automatic citizenship being granted. The nation today has internal issues between it's Orthodox Jewish population and those that are secular. However, it isn't a Theocracy such as Iran or the taliban in Afgahistan.
