What year was thutmose the fourth born in?

What would people who were born in the year 100 BC call the year they were born?

  • Julius Caesar was born on July 12th 100 BC. What would be written on Caesar's birth certificate? Born July 12th (year?) It wouldn't say July 12th 100 BC because there was no Christ yet, so how would his family refer to the year he was born?

  • Answer:

If in the Roman Empire they would call it a.u.c. DCLIII (653 years after the founding of Rome). Greeks might date it as year 1 of the 169th Olympiad - they counted time from the founding of the Olympic Games. Jews (I think) dated their calendar from the supposed date of the Creation. I believe their ritual calendar still does, but am not certain of the year numbers. Other cultures of course had their own time-marks. One thing we do know, by the way, is that the AD/BC system was not used or even thought of before the 6thC AD, so that scholars inevitably got their dates a bit out and, to this day, there is discussion about the actual date of the birth of Jesus.

It wouldn't say July either because the month didn't exist then (and it was named after Julius Ceaser). There were only 10 months (no July or August). Opinion varies as to whether it was 100BC or two years earlier. His birth date is probably reffered to as 'born in the sixth consulship of Gaius Marius' - dates usually relate to festivals or other siginificant days such as The Ides of March. Contrary to Sellar and Yeatman (1066 and All That) The Romans did not have the habit of counting backwards.
