Dr. Benjamin Spock. Here are some excerpts from the obituary on CNN.com: Famed pediatrician Dr. Spock dies at age 94 SAN DIEGO (CNN) -- Dr. Benjamin Spock, the pediatrician who influenced millions of parents in the United States and around the world to raise their children with love and common sense, died at age 94 at his home here Sunday. Spock's "Baby and Child Care," first published in 1946, was the bible of parents in the baby boom that followed World War II. "Trust yourself," Spock told parents. "You know more than you think you do." Mixing politics, pediatrics Spock first moved into the political limelight in 1962, warning of the possible hazards posed to children and nursing mothers by atmospheric nuclear testing. He was elected co-chairman of the National Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy. The former political conservative also became a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War, leading a march on the Pentagon in 1967. He argued, "What is the use of physicians like myself trying to help parents to bring up children healthy and happy, to have them killed in such numbers for a cause that is ignoble?" "People have said, 'You've turned your back on pediatrics,'" Spock said in 1992. "I said, 'No. It took me until I was in my 60s to realize that politics was a part of pediatrics." The draft has not happen since 1973; however, I do understand your question....many of today's young people do not have the need for service that the generation before had. If I have seen it once, I have seen it a thousand times...the young people sign up for military service, go through boot camp, and suddenly they are in Iraq or Afghanistan....and the whining begins..." I did not know that I would be going to WAR!!!" or my favorite, "They never told ME about this...." Well frankly, what did they think.....you go in the military and are trained to be a FIGHTING MACHINE....not a pencil pusher....DUH..... The draft dodges of the 60s have disgraced their families, their country, and by all rights should still face charges TODAY....you should have done your duty.......I lost many family members in Vietnam and I have many friends that were in Vietnam....My father-in-law served two tours in Vietnam and my Uncle served three tours in Vietnam...I know what I am talking about here...I am a former history teacher and have set the record straight on many occasions.

The liberal media of the 1950s and 60s. After Kennedy and Johnson (two so-called liberals ) mired us in VietNam.Great broadcasters like Cronkite and Rather put defeat all over TV even though we never lost a single battle.Mothers being the loving people that they are put draft evasion into their sons minds to protect them, even though their husbands had probably fought nobly in world war 2 or Korea.Plus Communist infiltraters and home grown radical A**holes stirred things up as well.
