Greatest Empire EVER KNOWN to MANKIND?

I'm surprised that no one has suggested the Mongols yet. Genghis Khan led one of the most impressive military expansions in history - he even wrecked the Chinese something fierce. It's also worth noting that the "Chinese Empire" was not an unbroken empire. The Mongols came and established the Yuan Dynasty, and also the Qing Dynasty was ruled by the Manchus, not the native Chinese. Yes, there were governments ruling China (which varied geographically a great deal throughout its history), but that's about it. And it was more like 4000 years than 5000 - the earliest dynasty was the Xia, which began around 2100 BCE. And that was still centuries before the Shang.. Alexander the Great, I agree, also founded a great, though short-lived empire. And the British were, of course, nothing short of ridiculous in their day.

the british empire in its heyday, it was the largest in the history of the world! covering 1 quarter of the surface of the earth :)

every empire was great that is the reason they were called empires. if u read world history u will find their are many more powerful empires. so who is the greatest is very difficult to recomend.

i have always been a fan of Egyptian empire. Man what those guys couldn't accomplish. It doesn't matter what empire had the most resources or the most slaves but which made the most impact on history and Egyptian is one of them, Roman would be the second, Chinese the third. not because of what they did at the time but because of what they did to leave an imprint on history.

there are many factors that cause us to believe one empire was greater than the other.. for example i would say the empire of Alexander the great was the greatest only because of the man himself and his excellence in military tactics, most famous was his defeat of the persian empire. others would not agree however as alexanders empire was not the biggest in history. otherwise i would say that the roman empire was widespread and showed considerable power and military and political understanding on the behalf of the romans. next of coarse would be the British Empire, such a small country was able to in many cases conquer and colonize country's with their influence continuing well into the future, unlike the french in indochina.

That is a tough question but I'm going with the Roman Empire. Without the Romans we would not have Christianity which was, along with Judea beliefs helped to form the greatest country on the planet. I'm talkin' the USA (unless you are one of those America hating Liberals).
