Answer:
Lincoln's presidency was significant mainly for its wartime innovations. He took office on March 20, 1861, and was at war less than a month later. He was assassinated before the last shots of the war were fired. Among some of the important developments Lincoln instituted during the war were: - Financing of the war by use of paper currency rather than hard money (specie). This was actually an concept of Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase, in which Lincoln played a key role by getting the "greenback" turned into reality. - Institution of the first income tax - up to that point, the country financed government through excise taxes (and after the war, went back to that system). - Creation of the first U.S. government social service program - the Freedmen's Bureau, which was aimed at assisting freed slaves to become self-supporting, fully-participating members of society. - Establishment of a government security program, at first using the private services of Pinkerton, that later evolved into the Secret Service. - Support for innovative government weapons development programs, including support of engineer John Eriksson, who designed and built the "Monitor" - launching the age of the modern metal warship. There are a great many more innovations that came from Lincoln. Had he survived the war, it is extremely probable he would have ended up one of history's most controversial presidents. Good luck!
