1917 the decisive turning point of World War I and the 20th century?

  • I read somewhere saying that 1917 is the decisive turning point of World War I and the 20th century. The most significant events I know in 1917 would be the US entering the war and the USSR withdrawing from the war, and I suppose these two events are the aforementioned turning points in WWI? America entering the war definitely accelerated victory, and in turn ending the war, creating the treaty, and leading to the 2nd war. But should this event be considered as a turning point of the entire century? Same thing for the Soviet's withdraw. It sure had a short-term consequence for the France, UK and US by making the war harder. But in long-term, what consequence did it have on the 20th century? Basically, I'm just not sure about this claim saying that 1917 is the turning point of the entire century, and I'm looking for more justification, Thanks!

  • Answer:

I've never heard or read about anyone saying 1917 was the turning point of the 20th century. Maybe who said it was thinking that was the year America appeared on the world stage and it was the first step leading to America becoming a Super Power at the end of WW2, and that's how it affected the 20th Century. Personally, I don't agree with that statement.

One argument you could use is that each era affects the ones after. By being so early in the century, it had more influence than something that occurred later. As you stated, the terms of peace forced on Germany, after WWI helped create the world that enabled Hitler to gain power.
