    Taj Mahal was constructed by the Mughal Emperor Shāh Jahān in 22 years (1631 - 1653) by a workforce of 22,000, as a mausoleum for his favourite wife, Arjumand Bano Begum, who is better known as Mumtāz Mahal.

As against the popular beliefs that the Taj was constructed by the Mughal King Shah Jehan in memory of his queen Mumtak Mahal it may be stated that no account of this construction or the sums spent on it are found in the Mughal records of the time. As against this one Pro.f.G.M.Oak has put forward a theory that the building was a Hindu construction Tejo Mahal(Abode of Light) and a place of worship. It was snatched away by the King and converted into a masuoleum.This is just a claim not supported by any independent evidence except the defiling of some Hindu Temples by the Muslim rulers.As against the claims that it was Mohammed Musa, an architect from Iran who supervised the construction(and who got his hands cut in exchange lest he construct a better building afterwards.) there have been claims from Italy that the artwork is the brainchild of their architect.

Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal. It was built in 1633. There is also a fact about it that it was built in 22 years by 20000 workers and after it was completed, Shah Jahan cut off the hands of the labourers so that they would not be able to copy it.
