Insane Asylums 1800's?

How were patients treated in insane Asylums in the late 1800s?

  • Answer:

Badly. However, in the 19th century there were some reforms starting. Dorothy Dix was a proponent of better treatment of people in asylums. This doesn't mean that people were treated well. Even as far as in the 1970"s, mentally disabled people were treated hardly more then animals, but the 1800's is when the first steps towards improvement happened. Electroshock therapy wasn't introduced until 1938 and lobotomy was introduced in in 1890 but was ridiculed. It didn't gain widespread use until after 1930. Prior to this, in the 18th century patients were kept chains and neglected for years or subject to numerous tortuous "treatments" including whipping, beating, bloodletting, shocking, starvation, irritant chemicals, and isolation.

They were treated as if they were wild animals. Basically they were put in rooms (cells) until they died.

terribly. they were given electro-shock therapy, ice baths, lobotomies without anesthesia..had their teeth pulled out, were tied to their beds. Needless to say the death rate at many of the places was ridiculously high...they died from neglect, disease, starvation, pneumonia, they were sexually abused by other patients and sometimes staff...it was a tragic time in America's history

Like criminals. There were very few valid treatments, but a lot of quackery. Locking patients up and keeping them drugged solved the problem as far as society was concerned - it was the 'out of sight, out of mind' stance - but it didn't do anything for the patients.
