How does fantasy football and fantasy basketball work?

So, my boyfriend and I don't have a lot of stuff in common. He loves sports, I love books. He loves cars, I love animals. He wants sex every night, on some days, all I want is a simple date night (one that doesn't end with a messy house). So, I've chosen to try to get into something he likes. He has a fantasy football team and a fantasy basketball team. So, I would like to know how the fantasy football and basketball league works. Thanks!
