What do tennis string gauges mean? Whats the difference?

  • whats the difference with 18 17 and 16 gauges? I don't understand what they do. What are the benifits/advantages one gauge has over the other?

  • Answer:

The higher the number (18, 17, 16), the thinner the string. 16 gauge is the median size. 17 and up being on the thin side, 15L (light) and lower being on the thick side. The thinner strings will create more spin on the ball and offer more touch and feel. They'll also tend to send more vibration back to the arm. And, as you can imagine, the thinner the string, the less durable. The thicker strings will offer more durability, less vibration, yet will sacrifice some spin production. I always suggest using the thinnest string you can get away with using without it costing you an excessive amount for frequent string-breaking.

The lower the gauge the thicker the string. If you have thick string it won't break as easy but you will lose touch on your shots.
