Why does the Men's Wimbledon trophy have a pineapple on the top?
-
I was watching the Wimbledon fianl yesterday and I noticed there was a pineapple on the top of the Men's trophy. a strawberry I can understand but why a pineapple?

Answer:
It's because lawn tennis was invented by sailors in the British armada who, when on shore leave, would attempt to knock seagulls out of the air by batting sea urchins at them using crude wooden paddles. The sea urchins would cry in anger whenever they were struck making a terrible din on the beach, giving the paddles their modern name of racket. When in the carribean one summer, Magellan and Nelson decided to have a seagull hunt, but as the urchins had swam south for the winter they ended up using a pineapple.... So, in conclusion I have not a feckin' clue my friend....

Gentlemen's Singles Championship The Gentlemen's Singles Trophy is a silver gilt cup and cover, presented by the All England Club in 1887, inscribed "The All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Champion of the World." The Cup stands 18 1/2 inches high and has a diameter of 7 1/2 inches. The Cup has a classical style with two handles and a raised foot. The lid is formed with a pineapple on top and there is a head wearing a winged helmet beneath each handle. There are two decorative borders with floral work and ovolo mouldings on the bowl of the Cup and on the handles. Commencing in 1949 all champions have received a miniature replica of the trophy (height 8 1/2 inches) However, there is no conclusive reason why there is a pineapple on the trophy.

the pineapple was put on the trophy in 1932 after the original 'pomegranate' trophy was stolen in the previous year. However, the original trophy from 1898 had to be replaced as it was too heavy for weary winners to lift after the final. This trophy was called 'the bunch of bananas' trophy and weighed in at a hefty 3 tons.

Because it was always a tradition to give the winner a pineapple to commemorate links with countries of the commonwealth that bear food and trade with England! So it was incorporated on the design of the trophy when made!
