What are the advantages and disadvantages of a small grip in tennis?

  • I have a 4 1/4 grip. what are the advantages and disadvantages of having a smaller grip? Also what are the advantages and disadvantages of having a bigger grip?

  • Answer:

you can get a little more whip on the ball with a small grip. Pretty much easier to handle. A bigger grip such as a 41/2 0r 45/8 tends to be better if you dont use much wrist. also, larger grips were the in thing during the 80's but have fallen out of favor with the better players. Most demos come in 4 3/8 so most players gravitate to that size.

sometimes if you use a smaller grip then your hand can get tired and sore alot quicker. (not to mention the callases-lol) i perfer the larger grips just because it cusions my hand more.

choose grip which fits you. not too small, not too big. i, myself use 4 1/4 grip and it fits me well. maybe the bigger the grip, the harder to swing the racket. it waste your energy.

never use a smaller grip than you need. you should be able to lay your pointer finger between your other hands finger and palm

I do not like a smaller grip. It is too easy to twist, so for me I had to grip harder. Moving to a bigger grip, I didn't need such a tight hold to prevent the racket from twisting.
