When do you think can i be a professional tennis player if i started playing at age 20?

  • i already know how to play tennis even before i play the sport in actual maybe because i am a very athletic person. i always endure any pain or any staff like this that i face during my plays.i really want to be a professional tennis player. Before,I used to be a member of track and field varsity team, also, I play other sports like football, chess, badminton, etc. But, what age do you think i can be a pro tennis player?can i be a pro player at age 25 or 26 if i'll join different world's open competitions?do you think my height 5'6 is already enough or advantageous for me as a player?can i be a professional tennis player in 5yrs or in a short period of time?

Long ago, Big Bill Tilden once said: "It takes five years to make a tennis player, and ten years to make a champion." Some people in recent memory have done it in 8 or 9 years, but in your case, you apparently have never been ranked before at age 20, so you appear to have very little experience as a tournament player. Height isn't your problem, if what I read here is right. Lack of experience is your problem. If this is correct, then I have to say sorry, but [regarding pro tennis success] as the old guy once said: "It ain't gonna happen." Consider this: About 80% or more of the guys who are already ranked by the ATP World Tour are *not* eligible to play in the quallies in the Grand Slam singles tournaments or the Masters 1000 tournaments. These 80% are very, very good tennis players. Understand? Recommendation: Play tennis because you *like* running around and hitting the ball, and playing matches is fun and exciting for you. That should be enough. Otherwise, you're going to be disappointed.

Most professional tennis players started at age 7 so to be honest, I don't think you could get to that level before your body is too old to compete at the level. Your height will be a disadvantage too. You would be better being a professional snooker or darts player, the regimen is kinder on your body, as long as you avoid the alcohol.

Be honest with you, you need to be realistic but stay positive. Just keep playing tennis. It's not the end of the world if you don't make pro, but you should try your best and see what happens. Honestly that's the attitude for life - try your best, and be prepared for all outcomes, and never give up. My predition is you will turn pro when you are 110 years old, but for you it is just matter of time.

There are so many tennis players that have started since they were very young. Many played from when they were 2-3 years old, and could barely hold a racket. But even for those people who start very young, I would say only about 10% (probably less) every make it as a pro player. It's good that you have done other sports and are athletic, but tennis isn't like track and field (which is quite basic), it is quite complex. There are so many different and difficult hits such as forehand, backhand, topspin, serve, volley, lob, etc. In order to become a professional player, you need to MASTER those, and I would say that mastering that takes about 15 years of practice. Also, keep in mind that at 20, many players are already pros, and by the time they are 25-26 they are usually starting to pass their glory days and age lowers their performance against the younger players. I'm not trying to crush your dreams. I love telling people to practice hard and never give up on their dreams. But what you're asking, is just realistic. 5 years of tennis will make you an AVERAGE player probably. If you go to a tennis club you will see people that have played for 20 years, but are no where near as good as any pro. However, tennis a a great sport and if you want to play tennis, play! Don't do it because you want to become a pro and be all famous though, do it because you truly love the sport. Focus on competitions in your local club instead of Grand Slams. Winning those are fun too! :)
