What style of play is your favorite?

  • One of my new Yahoo Answers contacts peaked my curiosity when they stated that they like more ethereal players. Hmm. Not sure how to define an ethereal player but it may come down to style of play which got me thinking about MY favorite style. As much as it saddens me to see serve and volley tennis going away, it's still not my favorite. I'm an aggressive baseliner and thus that's my favorite style of play. Not a counter-puncher but someone who dictates play from the baseline. An example of this was Andre Agassi. Rafael Nadal is another. I'd like to hear YOUR favorite style and an example of your archetypical player. Who on the tour either now or historically exemplifies your favorite style and why do you like this style/player? Sound off! You have the floor... Thanks Rungee for the idea! You rock!

Well growing up on Stefan, Pat, Boris and Pete I would say serve and volley. It required athleticism and skill and ended points quickly. Just exciting tennis. Amazing passing shots at times too. Second would be all court. The King is Roger Federer he is graceful and quick a real joy to watch. He has the skill of all previous champions rolled into one. 3rd Agressive baseliners - Andre Agassi who showed it could be done for decades. Even though he only played a little over 20 years the begining and end years had him in 4 decades - 70's 80's 90's and 2000's and he and his wife are the only male & female players to win Golden Slams. 4th Counter puncher - the best Lleyton Hewitt and had he been able to keep it in his pants a little longer would still be top 10. But I can't blame him - Bec is absolutely gorgeous.

The way I play is I find my opponents weakness and then use my strengths to attack it. I don't really play one certain way. At the level I play at, most of my opponents can only get so many "big shots" in. So my favorite to do is to rally with my opponents, throwing up a few lobs and slices here and there, until they get impatient and try to go for the winner. Most of the time that shot will go out or into the net.

Cool question. Hmm, where do I start. I have a funny history in that I started playing about 30 years ago and Conners, Borg and McEnroe were all big at the time. Serve and volleyers and all-court players were dominant at the time, but since I grew up on a mix of clay and hard courts, I tended to favor baseliners like Vilas and Nastase and worked hard to emulate them. Then I stopped playing for several years, and when I picked it up again over the last few years, suddenly I have this serve and volley game (which seems to work against the C-level players I compete against), so once again I am fighting against the trend. I can't say I favor one style over the other, although counter-punchers do tend to bore me, but what I have really grown to like is the power servers. Some people say it's boring to watch someone like Roddick just blow it past people, but I really enjoy that. Also I like watching people who get into the game emotionally. Federer, aside from his great shotmaking, is really dull to watch. I would much rather watch someone like Gael Monfils - that guy is just wild. Favorite player of all time would have to be John McEnroe. Yes, he's a complete ***, but love him or hate him, he was never dull.

I used to love serve and volley. But apparently my I'm too short to be strong enough with it. Now, I'm more an all court player. I try to be more aggresive from the baseline and attack to the net whenever I see an opportunity.

I bemoan the loss of good old-fashioned Serve & Volley tennis.. Ah, the days of Martina Navratilova and Pete Sampras. It is so frustrating to watch tennis , screaming " Come in", when someone hits a short ball. Hell Wimbledon, isn't even serve and volley anymore. Look at vintage Wimbledon matches and you see the area near the net, so beat up and abused. Now the baseline area is that way. Oh the sweet memories of the deep serve and the run to the net to volley.Glad I was able to witness that time.

skill is always interesting to watch..I find no enjoyment watching a player run around like a rabied dog trying to kill the ball like nadal and the williams games would rather watch barney pretend to be real//

You're welcome!!! When I said 'ethereal' players , I meant such players , upon seeing whose game , I forget that I'm sitting on Planet Earth!!! You know , the players whose games can be described with only one word : sublime - like Henin,Graf,Borg etc.... So I guess I rate players' games as sublime depending upon the grace of their movement and the beauty of their strokes !!! My fave style of play is the aggressive baseliner type , but , NOT a plain slugger - I like those players who hug the baseline and go in (to the net) for the kill when the time is ripe!!! Thats basically what Federer does - he hugs the baseline and then whips a shot whenever he gets the opportunity , which is SO unlike Nadal - he settles for 40-shot rallies and still blasts his way through !!! But yeah , its sad that serve-and-volley is declining , but lets face it , it isnt practical these days either to have a serve-and-volley game .Nevertheless , I will miss the baseliner vs serve-and-volleyer clash - there's no tennis match like that of a guy coming in versus a guy staying back!!!

I like what Novak Djokovic does, he tries with everything. You never know what's he going to do next. He tries drop shot, and hardly anyone does it. He's game is so heterogeneous! Also, I like Federer's elegant style. Yeah, he's elegant both on and off court. The way he hits that ball, it's just poetry! He moves incredibly well, and every stroke is perfection. It reminds me of ballet. The way he's preparing to serve, looks like a ballet dancer preparing for a pirouette. Love the guy, he's not all power, power, power, muscles, muscles, muscles:) Thanx for the question, Mr Big:)
