What are the common rules for tennis tournaments?

  • Answer:

***Like are you supposed to call out something if your gonna win the match etc*** In Rules of Tennis, there is a section called "The Code" which is written for matches where no officials are watching. Perhaps the most important element in The Code is that if a point ends with a shot that you must make a call for a ball landing on your side of the court, a ball that you are *not* absolutely certain is out or good, then you must give the point to your opponent. Do not ask to replay the point. If a player adopts the philosophy of "When in doubt, call it out," he/she may unfortunately win matches that way, but in fact, this kind of person is NOT really be winning tennis matches, he's [she's] just committing theft or fraud of some sort. If you do this type of thing, do not expect people to forget what you did. They will remember what you did for a long, long time. OTOH, if you seen "green" [or whatever color] in between the line and the bounce point, you know for sure that the ball was out, then stick to your call. Sometimes players will question calls as a form of gamesmanship intended to irritate the opponent. If you're playing a match in a tournament and you encounter a problem or something you don't understand, say "Excuse me," and go ask for help from one of the officials there. The Code has several reasons for leaving the court to request an official. However, the "Rule of Tennis" book is slightly less expensive, it has all the basics, plus The Code. Here is a USTA web page with a free, illustrated, pdf file that has basic rules for you: http://www.usta.com/Play-Tennis/getting_started/
