What is tennis elbow and what can help the pain?

Fastest way to cure tennis elbow?

  • Hi guys. :) So I've been playing tennis for 4 years, but now since I'm a freshie in high school I go to practice EVERY DAY immediatly after school. And ive been playing tennis non-stop for two weeks, and now my elbow is irritated, and it's ticking me off cause I can't play. It's no where near extreme pain, but it's that deep achiness type pain. My coach said to put ice on it 3-4 times a day over the weekend, and that's what I do. Ice it for 30 ins 3-4 times a day. Do you think that will help? Does anyone have any suggestions? Because tere's no way I can be out for like 3 weeks, I've got a game in 1 week. Any help is appreciated!

WOW it's so funny because I'm sixteen and your situation is almost exactly like mine. I upped my tennis to four times a week, sometimes more and sometimes twice in one day. I've asked questions and done lots of research, I think playing, at least for now, with an elbow brace (twenty bucks at walgreens, CVS, wal-mart. Etc.) helps alot. Also, afraid that Tennis Elbow requires you to stop for a few days. Truthfully, you really will at some point probably have to stop for a week or two but for now, wait a day or two, give your elbow SOME time to heal, maybe ice it once or twice while watching some tv. The tendons are enflamed, torn, need to let them heal. Them go out on the third day with a brace and play, maybe you can loosen the string tension or get a less stiff racket (I use the Aero pro drive GT, very stiff racket so I've had my problems!) loosen the string tension will mean less control, more power and spin but will help you elbow. You're probably a year or two younger than me and we're young. My tennis elbow went away after a week and a half of stopping and now I keep a brace in my bag, just in case. Icing helps, but tennis elbow is really something that at SOME POINT, you'll have to stop for at least a week... I'm sort of almost done with it (hopefully) so I might be wrong about some of this but it worked for me. Online, it also suggests that in the future, go and search, there are lots of workout, quick fifteen minutes stuff to do right after you finish tennis, that strenghens the muscles and, in addition to improving your overall game, improves the muscles and helps avoid future injuries! Good luck, really really hope you feel better! :) Daniel

Sorry about your injury. What you have is tendinitis or inflammation of the tendons in your arm. Only rest, anti-inflammatory medication likeIbuprofenn or Tylenol (ask the pharmacist) and rest. Ice does help as well plus just rest. Since you use your arm for everything there is a wrap you can purchase at the pharmacy that is sort of standard equipment for racquet games. Follow the instructions on the package.Basically it puts gentle pressure on the tendons and allow them to heal naturally. You can also use this as prevention while you are playing tennis. You need to consider how tightly you are holding the racquet and the grip size. It just needs to be just right for the size of your hand. The weight of the racquet might also be an issue. I know it is in ounces but it adds up due to all the time playing the game. During the game or practice get used to holding the racquet with the opposite hand while not actively playing. Pros do that. Give the hand/arm some rest. So, there is no quick way for the body to recover. It just needs time to rest. Best of luck.
