Tennis challenge rule?

In the new tennis challenge rule, is the player allowed to seek help from others to decide (like NFL coaches)?

  • If the answer is no, I think this would be very difficult to enforce and could be controversial on a big point.

  • Answer:

In theory, no. The player and the player alone is supposed to decide whether or not to challenge a call. In reality, we all can see that coaches and even fans can have an influence on decisions made by the player on whether or not to challenge. If you watch the umpire, they will say "It's your decision to challenge or not challenge". They get no assistance from courtside. But just wait and watch. Abuses will begin to crop up here and there.

I guess so, I just watched Federer beat Blake 7-6, 6-4 and when Blake's coach and family thought there was a controversial call, they shouted out "Challenge it! Challenge it!" like 5 or 6 times. I don't think the crowd would be forced to not say anything when the player makes a decision.

They are not supposed to recieve help from others but many players look up at their box so they could recieve help if they really wanted to. Too bad everyone isn't like Federer though.
