Tennis challenge rule?

In the new tennis challenge rule, what would prevent a coach watching the game cueing the player to challenge?

  • For example, maybe the coach would yell "hang in there!" to signal a bad call or "keep it up" to signal a good call. Then the player could immediately ask for a challenge. What would prevent this?

  • Answer:

Actually nothing prevents a coach from cueing a player to challenge. The worst that could happen is that if a coach is "coaching" a player during a match they may be forced to pay a fine and the coach could be barred from sitting in the players box for the rest of the tournament. This virtually never happens as coaches are often giving signs and unless it is blatant most people look the other way. Therefore, it would be quite easy for a coach to signal to a player whether or not to challange a call.

Nothing will ever stop a coach from using signals of any kind. It comes down to whether or not a player can get away with it. The only way to get rid of signals is to play the match without an audience. I feel that coaching (to this extent) is going to happen one way or the other. You cannot stop signals. Any good baseball coach can create any number of signals. The umpire must witness these signals in order to make a judgement. And in most instances, the umpire is too busy working to notice.
