    It's a tradition that goes back to the earliest days of the NFL. Although it's true that the Lions haven't been very good lately, they are 33-30-2 in the 65 games that have been played on Thanksgiving since 1934. They are 5-5 in the last ten Thanksgiving Day games.

Tradition. They started playing on Thanksgiving pretty much as a marketing ploy because knew there weren't many other events going on. I can't recall when they started the tradition but it was definitely before the Cowboys started doing it. I want to say it started in the 1930's but I am not certain.

i think that they play on thanksgiving caz the schdule is just made that way.

With the proverbial thump to the back of your head.... Tradition...just like in DALLAS. It is also the only time each year that the Lions are on TV. Lions were at least tolerable to watch with Barry Sanders.

Originally teams rotated but many did not want to play on Thanksgiving. Eventually it was settled that the Lions would play the first Thanksgiving game followed by the Cowboys in the second game. They were, I believe the only teams willing to commin to it. The NFL is adding a third night time Thanksgiving game this year where the teams will annually change, but the Lions and Cowboys games will stay a tradition
