What is red tide?

ROLL - TIDE - ROLL ? Explain please!, what tide in Birmingham,AL. it is miles inland ?.?

  • I am totally ignorant when it comes to American football, I am from Mainland Europe and never understood American Male preference for handling their odd shaped balls,but some obviously proud Alabaman used the yell in answering a question.So I looked it up. I still don't really get it! I did find Crimson Tide, which literally translates in Rough Dutch Slang as a women's monthly period. I hazard a guess that's not the answer either!. I presume they wear red and roll over their opponents like a Tsunami, but I'm hoping for better. Where does it stem from ?

    It comes from an Alabama fight song. It's about "rolling" to victory. Crimson is the school color and their nickname is "Crimson Tide". Yea Alabama Yea, Alabama! Drown 'em Tide! Every 'Bama man's behind you, Hit your stride. Go teach the Bulldogs to behave, Send the Yellow Jackets to a watery grave. And if a man starts to weaken, That's a shame! For Bama's pluck and grit have Writ her name in Crimson flame. Fight on, fight on, fight on men! Remember the Rose Bowl, we'll win then. So roll on to victory, Hit your stride, You're Dixie's football pride, Crimson Tide, Roll Tide, Roll Tide!!

The true origin comes from a sports writer in the 1920's. The University of Alabama wore then, as they do now, Crimson jerseys. A sportswriter, commenting on Alabama's hard-hitting performance, wrote "Alabama pounded on their opposition like a Crimson Tide." Alabama liked the line and adopted it as their nickname. And the university of Alabama is in Tuscaloosa, not Birmingham.

What TheBigShot said is correct, but a common sign at football games has made the saying more popular and recognizable. Someone puts a roll of toilet paper on a stick, then a box of Tide detergent, then another roll of toilet paper. Hence, Roll Tide Roll! :-) UAB is one of those confused schools, though, like Auburn. They don't know whether they're the crimson tide or the elephants! Auburn can't pick between Tigers and WarEagles. I, personally, am a full-blooded Georgia Bulldog!

The time in NOW to buy at the cheaper price...so you better hurry! As to the color, the Gulf of Mexico occasionally has a problem with an algae called "red tide" which is destructive to animal life and some plant life; perhaps that is where the crimson comes from.
