How to unit-test a presenter in a MVP?

Isn't it crazy that "The Most Dominant Player ever" has only won 1 MVP?

  • Think about it. Shaq is without a doubt the most dominant player of All-Time, and he has only won 1 MVP in his 16+ year NBA career. Just look at the numbers this man has put up. I'll only mention his best season stats for this question. 93 he averaged 29ppg, 14rpg, 2apg, 3bpg- Didn't win the MVP 94 he averaged 29ppg, 11rpg, 2apg, 2bpg- Didn't win the MVP 97 he averaged 28ppg, 11rpg, 2apg, 2bpg- Didn't win the MVP 2001he averaged 29ppg, 13rpg, 2apg, 3bpg- Didn't win the MVP Clearly he put up amazing numbers in his career, more amazing than Duncan MVP years and he won 2 freaking MVP's in a row with less stats. Shaq has almost always been on winning teams to, so you can't blame that on him not getting more MVP's. I don't get how Shaq has only won one regular season MVP and not even a defensive player of the year award with those blocks and rebounds he had early in his career. Here, you guys can check out his numbers if you want http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/o/onealsh01.html What do you guys think? Should he have won more than 1 MVP?

  • Answer:

He suffers from "Wilt Chamberlain syndrome". Wilt once said "Nobody roots for Goliath", and it's the truth. Shaq is SO big, SO strong, SO quick for his size, SO dominant physically.. people just expect extraordinary results from him. Numbers which would earn a player who is less physically gifted a unanimous MVP just earn a yawn when Shaq puts them up.

Absolutely. But look he has also got 3 Finals MVP's. I would rather have those than the regular MVP award. I definietly think he should have won more though. KB24 AKA The Black Mamba

You raise a great point. Shaq gets left out of discussion now that there are so many superstars overshadowing his transition from his prime into retirement. He may well have gotten robbed of a couple more MVPs. Maybe its because he had Kobe in LA, D-Wade in MIA, and before he went to the Lakers wasn't able to win on his own...The NBA likes to stress winning as an important factor, but sometimes skill like this shouldn't be neglected for products of a great system, a bit like Duncan (still a great player, but the Spurs have a spectacular system).

I agree it's probable Shaq should have one at least one other MVP. As for "Most Dominant Ever" That man, Wilt Chamberlain won 4 MVPs. NBA MVP (1960, 1966-1968) .

I Ask, I Answer

He probably should have won more times i agree, but even without those MVPs he is still known as one of the most dominant centers to play in the NBA

Stats and MVP do not always go together. For that reason is why Kobe despite averaging 35 ppg one season didnt win the MVP. Also why, in the season Wilt Chamberlain avg 50 ppg in he also did not win the MVP that year. There are a lot more factors that go into MVP selections than just numbers.

same with kobe!!

At least he's got 4 championship rings and that is more important. It only shows that Shaq is a team player and wasn't selfish. I'm already happy for the kind hearted Shaq a long time ago. With his age, getting old, I would rather see him get one more ring rather than the individual MVP award.

You're right but isn't that crazy that Kobe Bryant has 1 MVP, 2 Scoring Titles, 1 Finals MVP and he's being compared to Michael Jordan who has 5 MVPs, 10 Scoring Titles, 6 Finals MVPs. He may have 4 rings but he was only the Ring Leader 1 out the 4 rings he has which is why Shaq was awarded those 3 Finals MVPs. Let's not forget during the 1997 All-Star Game at halftime, Shaq's 5th season he was named one of NBA's 50th Greatest Players of All-Time in the ceremony they had. The reason why he didn't why it 93, 94, 97 is because legends were still in the NBA. (93-94' Hakeem Olajuwon, 94-95' David Robinson, 97-98 Michael Jordan). Shaq was already considered a legend after he was in the NBA a short period of time, but still why would they give him MVP when Michael Jordan was still in the NBA.
