Ultrasound machine for home use?

Why don't they use a pitching machine during the home run derby?

  • As I was watching it last night, the pitchers were not consistent in giving the players a good ball to swing at. So why wouldn't they use a pitching machine to give the players a perfect pitch everytime to hit a home run? Is it because of tradition? Homerun derby+pitching machine=way more homeruns/entertainment

  • Answer:

they use a pitcher and not a machine because the batters want to get the ball to where they feel comfortable to hit it out. like puljos he did so bad because hes used to getting under neath the ball in reg. games. when he had his own pitcher he was over thinknig it and saying where hed like to hit it and hes not used to that.

Hmm... I never really thought about it. That would at least put every player on an even field. I noticed that most of the pitchers from last night had different arm angles and speeds. Using a pitching machine would make more sense. It would speed up the contest... there wouldn't have to be as many pitches taken as there typically are. Heck... maybe even Inge can hit at least one homer off of a pitching machine...

I thought the pitchers were pretty consistent around the plate. I think the players like to see "live" pitching rather than a machine. It makes it more realistic and the players get to choose their own guy. I think 75% of the pitches were hittable, but some good pitches weren't swung at, which slowed down the Derby.

Seems to me, that instead of that laser-tracking thingie, they would have leveled the playing field by using a pitching machine along time ago, some of the pitchers were worn out before the end of the first round.I agree, bring on the machine!!

It's too easy man... It has to be just like batting practice.

Then why not have a robot hitting as well? <sarcasm obviously> They can't use real baseballs in a pitching machine so it just wouldn't be the same. PS - Wow, 4 thumbs down in 10 minutes for my answer. Didn't know it would rub people the wrong way.

Powermong'r The Machine

The way the contest is set up now, every hitter chooses the person they want to have pitch to them. Remember last year Josh Hamilton had his old American Legion coach pitching to him. If a hitter chooses who he wants to pitch for him, then he can't complain that the ball wasn't in the right spot. If they used a pitching machine, they'd have to stop after every batter and readjust the machine to throw pitches just where the new batter liked it. And you'd inevitably have some batter who's never quite satisfied with where the machine is throwing the ball, and wants it a half-inch higher and a quarter-inch more inside. You'd spend way more time adjusting the machine for each new batter, and the contest already drags on wayyyyyyy too freaking long.

Because when they take the pitches it means that it isn't their perfect pitch. The live pitching can help getting them a perfect pitch.
