What is your career? Do you love it?

Will what you're good at decide your career, or what you love-desire?

  • I'm 20 and I'm currently attending Rutgers University. I'm still technically that "lost" student trying to figure things out. I'm happy to say I'm adventurous and study new and different things-which is nice because I can narrow what I "don't" enjoy. I'm wondering-because I'm recently gaining interest in business, entrepreneurship, stocks, and investing. Now all of these field-or careers if you'll say-involve intense knowledge pertaining with math and statistics and what you not. I'm terrible at math just terrible. It's my WORST ability; my Achilles heel to say. My question is, do you believe what a person loves and desires and is motivated to become good-the best at-will drive them to become better at things they're not to pursue their dreams. Or do you think are talents guide us-even in directions we don't want to go, but do because it's what we're good at and is what is easiest to us. See for me I struggle and struggle at math and am very slow at it. Let's say for example, I love the stock market and want to become a broker. I love it, but I'm terrible at math. So because I'm terrible at it, it's going to be VERY difficult to proceed forward and pursue. Yes I can work hard and practice, but do you think enough practice would allow me to overcome my greatest weakness so I can pursue something I enjoy?

  • Answer:

Buy yourself an entry-level textbook and see if you can understand it. If so, then you can indeed enter the field you want. Otherwise, you can continue it as a hobby but you would never understand it well enough to act quickly enough to earn enough money to live. Advertising has a similar basis in predicting how people will act in the future, without the mathematics.
