What Is Science?

PLZ HELP: What is the Science behind Abortion? When does human life begin, biologically?

  • Basically, I'm an open book. Tell me what the science is behind what is a human being, what is a life, what is a human life, ALL AS IT RELATES TO SCIENCE. I believe in Science, so Science! Human Being would probably be Biology. Life would be Biology. So someone who know's biology would be a good answer. Also, tell me the science behind abortion; so, what is a fetus, is it alive, is it human, what actually happens in an abortion clinic, does the time the abortion takes place in the pregnancy matter as it relates to life, scientifically speaking (not legally), etc. Lastly, using everything you've told me, hopefully with some science cited, give me your educated conclusion; is abortion murder of a human being, or simply a medical procedure with limited risk to the woman. Note: This question isn't an ethical question, it's a scientific one. I'm not asking Pro-Life or Pro-Choice, I'm asking for science. The reason I ask is because I recently got into philosophy, and have come to the conclusion that I feel murder is wrong, but that I don't know if abortion is wrong; instead of someone telling me whether it's right or wrong based on their standards, I want someone to tell me the facts and science behind abortions, so I can make a decision for myself. Thanks!

  • Answer:

Biologically, human life began sometime a few thousand years ago. There most likely is no clear cut time period of when we were no longer a ape of some sort and when we became human. The sperm is a living human cell. The egg is a living human cell. A fetus is a developing body within the body of a being that has a womb or within an egg. In human beings, it is somewhere between eight weeks of development and birth. It's widely thought that it can not feel pain and is not in any form aware before 20 weeks, though some scientists actually believe it doesn't even begin before the third trimester. It has a beating one chambered heart sometime in the first trimester, but it doesn't have any real brain development until later one. If it were born without brainwaves, it wouldn't be considered alive. There are several abortion methods. The most common is simply a vacuum that sucks out the fetus. Then the doctor will make sure nothing is left over, scrape out what is, and it's over. It's not pretty, but that's the way most surgeries are. Murder would require that it first be a human being. It isn't legally a human being until it has been born, and legally a human being can not take rights from another human being. Which it does when it takes up residence and uses a person's body and blood without their consent. Second, abortion would have to be illegal. Which it isn't as of right now. I think it's also important to note that the fetus can't feel pain and isn't aware when all but 1% of abortions take place. Meanwhile the mother is very aware, can suffer, and her health, welfare, and very life or put in danger by pregnancy.

When the sperm unites with the egg, I then become a fetus, so don't abort me," because now it is "my choice," as it should be.

well, scientifically speaking, as you put it, life is irrelevant, if you are considering that fetuses are precious then why not all animals, why not all plant life. unless you are saying man is above all the rest and we can do anything we want, then it becomes exactly what you weren't asking for, a choice, an opinion. you don't need a lifetime of institutionalized education to know what life is, how precious it is, and what defines life. example: let's say life is when conception occurs, as in when the sperm joins with the egg. what happens if we get to the point when cloning is possible, is it then alright to do what ever one pleases to your clone just because it was not conceived the same way as the rest the populous. and by this logic, since one is held accountable for their heritage, every person who has every committed a crime in the history of mankind, even someone who is the distant relative to, let's say hitler, and every family associate of the criminal should be persecuted just as if they them self were guilty of all past crimes. as you can see, such a subject can not be contemplated without the individual perspective, since there is no right or wrong, especially in science. after all, objectively speaking, life is no more relevant than a spec of dirt. best case scenario, the governing entity that declares law as well as enforces it, is a "morally" sound one with the interest of every single living creature in "mind". although at this point in time we are far from this scenario, though better than many possibilities. sorry if i didn't give an actual answer, it is not possible, or rather, logical, to give a subjective answer objectively.

i personally believe that abortion is wrong, it is still life no matter how you look at it.it has live life cells that makes it grow continuously, while still inside it's mother's womb.so when you abort it you technically killed it.so it's murder.with common sense.though with humans own free will, beliefs, outlook in life and practicality,it can be both right and wrong to abort and killed it,given the situation.is the baby wanted or not? if it's not then people will believe it's okay to to abort it and it's not murder. each one of us came from being a fetus and we are alive from then until now.basically our life start's,from that very moment.you have ask this to your self, what do you think and believe.

A new human life begins at inception. To prevent this life from maturing to the point of birth is murder.

Well the biological facts behind a fetus is that... Cells begin to multiply at the moment of conception. During the first month of a pregnancy the internal organs begin to form. There is a heart that has begun to beat at around two weeks. When the soul of a child forms or begins is not scientific so I will not get into that as you do not want that opinion. What happens during an actual abortion... You will lay on the table and the doctor will come in. He/she will then take 10 separate dilating prongs and insert them into the girl to open up her cervix. They then take a suction and basically suction out the entire uterus leaving the girl no longer pregnant. When you are attempting to determine if abortion is murder it is very hard to do this scientifically do to the fact that it is in fact, an personal opinion that each individual has. I would however say this, abortion is legal. It is going to continue to be legal. If people would understand that, scientifically something good could come from this it would be better. The stem cell research that was being done on aborted fetuses before religious activist succeeded in pulling the plug on it would have benefited the medical field tremendously. I remember reading a research article on a study that was being done to reverse the effects of other wise irreversible brain damage. Six people were considered brain dead and were brought out of their comas and given a second chance at life...

When the egg is fertilized it attaches it’s self to the Uterus wall. An abortion is the scraping the uterus wall and removing the egg, cell clump, baby, fetus from that wall. Birth control pills/ Iud’s do the same thing –they do not keep the egg from fertilization the just it from attaching to the wall or they force the lining to evacuate as if it did not have a (Insert favorite term here) attached. This is why the Catholic church is anti birth control pills-- But if you say life begins at conception--then The pill and or IUD's would be the very same thing as an abortion. because they do not stop conception. One view point is that life can not being until the first breath, because up until then the (insert favorite term here fetus / baby) is 100% reliant on its mother. A (Insert favorite term here) cannot survive without its mother in the first trimester. However after 23 or so weeks the (Insert favorite term here) can live with out its mother. So many, biologically speaking, feel that life can be sustained around that point in time. many (not all) in the "scientific community" agree and that is why Late term abortions are illegal. However no one really knows when life begins that is why this is a never ending question. Many feel that in the first trimester the (Insert favorite term here) is still forming and is still a clump of cells unable to live, feel or think and is fully reliant on the mother to grow. Personally speaking, I do not like abortion. Therefore I will not have one. However I will not force my views, beliefs and preferences on anyone else. No one makes this choice flippantly. And it is something they will live with all their life. But it is up to them to make that choice. That is between then, their heart and God and not me. I can be against Abortion and still support a woman’s right to choose. I feel that instead of taking away that right, we should educate our girls and make adoption easier and more assessable.

The problem is, science can't say for sure when "life" begins. Eugenicists want to tell us it begins after birth, so an abortion up to after the birth (they also claim a baby with a birth defect is also better off dead) is okay. Theologians usually claim it begins at conception. There are arguments for when the heart starts beating, when the fetus can sustain itself outside the womb, the beginning of the third trimester, and several other milestones in the development of the fetus. Like science, I don't know. So, because we are talking about a human life here, I take the most conservative approach and say at conception.
