What were the basic teachings of Descartes in layman's terms?

• I have to write a research paper on Descartes. I have watched a documentary/interview on Descartes and I have checked out numerous books from the library. So, I am really trying to understand his concepts. But, can someone please explain to me in "layman's terms" his basic/core teachings. What should I focus on in my paper? I know that I should include his "Method of Doubt." But, there is so much information available and I am getting writer's block. Please help. Thank you in advance.

  I think therefore I am. This is the only truth in life because all else may be false. The "Method of doubt" is that EVERY other thing perceived could be false because it could be based on incorrect info. Think about "The Matrix" where the people were all in a dream world until they woke up in the machines. Well who's to say we aren't in a dream world now and the real one isn't so fundamentally different that everything we know was wrong or based on wrong info. But the one and only thing you can count on is that "I Think therefore I am" Because you can think by definition you exist.
