Who is your favorite atheist philosopher and religious philosopher?

What philosopher who lived after 1900 disagreed with David Hume?

  • I have to constructed a discussion between two philosophers; one who's life span was before the 1900's and one who's was after. I decided to use David Hume for the earlier philosopher, but I am having trouble finding a philosopher that disagreed with him who lived after the 1900's. Any suggestions? Thank you.

  • Answer:

Disagreed with him about what issue, exactly? Hume had a lot of opinions on a lot of different subjects. But one key postulate of Hume's was the notion that there is a very sharp distinction between statements of fact on the one hand and statements about the relationship of ideas on the other. Kant picked up on this distinction, calling them synthetic and analytic propositions respectively. The 20th century philosopher Antony Flew called this "Hume's fork," and attributed great significance to it. If you want the name of someone who has argued that this whole distinction is misguided, THAT could lead to an interesting dialog. One answer is Robert J. Fogelin, the author of an important essay that appears in the book "The Cambridge Companion to Hume."
