If there was a magical portal into the mind of anyone, through whose eyes would you want to see the world?
-
Imagine there was a magical portal you could climb through that would lead you inside the mind of anyone from any time in history, and for a day you could see everything from their perspective. You would merely be an observer, and wouldn't be able to control their body or influence their thinking, but you'd get to view the world through their eyes. You would literally spend a day in the life of someone. You can spend each day out of one week venturing into the mind of a celebrity, politician, historical figure, ancestor, or whomever else you’d like. During that week your own body would be in a coma that would cause you no physical harm, and when you emerged from it you would retain all your memories of what you experienced. What seven people (one person for each day of the week) would you choose, and why? How do you think the experience would affect you? Thanks in advance for your answers. : )

Answer:
Wow. I was pondering over this exact question over the weekend, and I asked almost everyone I saw over the course of Saturday and Sunday for their opinions. So...*rewinding back*...here are my seven people that I would virtually give anything in my possession to be for a day. : ) MONDAY: To kick start an awesome week, I would spend *half* my day as the incredibly bright and quirky author Jodi Picoult. I went through a creative writing phase, during which I was addicted to her novels, and their captivating plots, teetering climaxes, unexpected endings, and altogether heartfelt morals. I am so truly and intensely impressed by how she can brainstorm and weave intricate stories out of thorny topics, so to see through a casual incident, an everyday occurrence (that most take for granted) through her eyes would be fascinating. And I know this is cheating, but I would love to spend the other half of my day as the incredibly talented poet / writer / performer / teacher / director Maya Angelou. I learned a great deal about the hardships in her life through her autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" (as per your recommendation!) and her recent novel "Letter to My Daughter", which is so truly inspirational that I can't help but muse the kind of insight, experience, and wisdom she has. TUESDAY: I think the greatest person ever to live was Helen Keller, and as a woman who was blind, deaf, and virtually had every right to give up and destine herself to a life of worthlessness and and waste, to say that she truly challenged the society's standards of determination and courage would be an understatement. I just checked out her autobiography "Story Of My Life" which I plan to read immediately. I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to not be able to see the immensely beautiful sunrise and gorgeous spring flowers in full bloom, or the sound of children laughing on a playground, and a heartfelt poem being read to you. I want to see life in her perspective, and to recognize what drove her to accomplish all she accomplished; what enabled her to have such a brightly beautiful mindset despite all the difficulties she encountered in life. WEDNESDAY: Hey, would it be fair to peer through the eyes of two people, who are often within a few rooms from each other? I think American politics and affairs are in much better hands than they were over a year ago, and my first temptation was Barack Obama, a man who people often take jabs at without truly and deeply understanding the mess that he landed in when he was first inagurated. Rome wasn't built in a day, but some people still believe that the President is "taking his sweet time" trying to navigate us toward a hopeful future, when in reality it is so much harder than it looks. I commend President Obama for his efforts, but in actuality he's not the one that I would see through. I'd pick Michelle Obama because I think she is an incredibly cultured, well-spoken, and graceful First Lady; as well as Hilary Clinton, who I admire for her wit, intelligence, and initiative. THURSDAY: Of all the stereotypical geniuses of the world -- Einstein, Beethoven, Picasso -- I pick Mozart. I absolutely love his music, and find it compelling, inspiring, and simultaneously difficult to listen to and understand. At the moment, I'm kind of lagging when it comes to my own piano playing at the moment, and through his eyes, I want to embrace a new perception of music, and to cherish, appreciate, and empathize with melodies as he did. FRIDAY: Friday calls for a little "you" time, and I'd reflect on this particular day over my past days' experiences, and write about it so these memories don't simply come off after one wash. I love my English teacher, and she has honestly taught me more about appreciating the language than anyone else, and has perpetually encouraged me to embrace my strengths in a variety of ways. Like me, I think she's a bit of a dreamer (a bit like a future version of me), and I would see life in her perspective, which would be incredibly enlightening. : ) SATURDAY: Almost the end of my week! My choice today is a no-brainer. Not to be cheesy, but you, Lark, have (as many others have mentioned as well) inspired, motivated, and molded a great deal of who I am now. It's truly a gift that I've had the privilege of meeting you on Y!A, and you continue to amaze me in so many ways. So I can't resist, I think it would be fabulous to be you for a day, and to know how it feels to paint, dance, sing, write, and live as you do. : ) SUNDAY: My last day...wow. I'm a bit weepy with nostalgia at this point, but today is definitely going to be worthwhile, because I'm spending it with the person I loved most in this universe, my grandma. She passed away when I was around 5, so my memories of her are blurred, but I see and pray for her every day. My mom keeps her picture in a beautiful frame and I smile every time I see her angel face. There is nothing I want more than to spend a day in her perspective, in her difficult life, being the golden-hearted and brave woman she was, who taught me more about love and life than anyone else. And, at the end of this eventful week, I would flop down on my bed, and feel happy that I'm me. : ) (((((Damienne))))) ~ Francesca

When I think of magical portals, I think of those hypnosis spirals: http://www.prevention.com/pvnstatic-assets/images/298x232_article_size/health/298x232-heal_faster_hypnosis-298x232_heal_faster_hypnosis.jpg But that's just me :) MONDAY; would most definitely follow Leonardo Da Vinci. I've always been a huge admirer of Da Vinci's work, and living life through his eyes, would be one of the greatest experiences of my life. I'd love to see him paint or invent. I'd love to see how he so flawlessly analyses things, and manages to grasp the most concealed concepts. TUESDAY; I'd go for Hellen Keller, who was too a very inspirational figure. One of my greatest fears is losing one of my senses, and for Keller to have lost two, is almost heartbreaking. But despite he disability, she's gone on to live to a ripe age, and follow her dreams. She was a writer - I want to be a writer someday - I just think it's amazing that she was so motivated to pursue this. WEDNESDAY; Adolf Hitler. We're studying Germany in Modern History, and a product of this focus study is Hitler and his sadism. Historical tyrants have always interested me, from Caesar to Mao, Romanov to Stalin. Hitler has been a primary favourite, but not on a respectable level. I loathe Hitler, and his perspective on life would absolutely fascinate me. How can someone sleep when they've cause over 45 million casualties? Plus, I've always wanted to grow a mustache. THURSDAY; I would view Shakespeare's mind. He can certainly write a great storyline, and convey it through a babble of words, half of which he literally conjured from his mind. I hate analysing and writing redonkulously long essays on his work, but I admit; he's good. I think I already said I wanted to be a writer. I think exploring the mind of Shakespeare and the stories he never documented would be great! Great motivational kick. FRIDAY; would follow Paris Hilton. Ugh. Loathe her as much as I loathe Hitler, but exploring the mind of someone so flat and famous would be great. I'm am by a long shot one of the most bland people alive, and I think that viewing life on the red carpet, and people swarming you wherever you went would be amazing for a day. And all she had to do was exist! SATURDAY; I'd follow Churchill, another figure I admire. His perspective of life would definitely make me go on to do greater things with my life. And SUNDAY, I'd follow you :) Seriously! You're one of the most inspiring people alive, Lark. I really think I've become a better person, because I've read of you're success. Life in your eyes would most definitely push me out of my comfort zone, and I'd feel obligated to do something "good" with my life. You're pretty cool, Dami :D Thanks for this. I'm going to go to bed now.

Oh my goodness. Anyone in history really opens up so many people that I would want to see the world through. This is an amazing question. Here I go: MONDAY: My dad: I would want to see one day, just a regular day, through his eyes, but it would have to be a Monday. My parents are divorced and we see him Mondays, Thursdays, and every other weekend. Since Monday is one of the days that he is with us, I would want to see the day through his eyes. I know that being with us brings him unimaginable joy, I can see it in his eyes, but it would be so interesting to see life through his eyes. He is smart, incredibly so, and cultured, and funny, clever, just a fun person to be around. How satisfying must that be? I would want to know. My dad isn't a president, or famous, but he is my dad, and that makes him pretty amazing. TUESDAY: My dad's dad: He is my grandfather, but I never met him. I would want to go back to the day he came to this country, in the early 1900's. When he travelled from Lithuania to America, he really had nothing. But he had his family, and his language. His name was changed to something more "American" so we don't even know what the actual family name was. I would want to know that. I would want to remember the name, so I could look up family history. But aside from that, I want to know what it's like to travel to a completely new place, with a completely new language, but being such a young child. I would be seeing it through such young eyes, "reading" the naive thoughts of someone experiencing something so new and different from a normal life experience. I want to know what that's like, and the family information I would get to find out is immeasurable. WEDNESDAY: Malia Obama: Not the President, but his daughter. Because seeing a day through the President's eyes is too stressful, too much pressure. But an 11 year old is someone who really gets to enjoy everything. No questions, no confusion, just fun. I would get to explore the White House and go to a really prestigious school for a day. I wouldn't want to be Sasha, who seems to be too young to really understand what is going on around her life (I know I'm probably wrong) but I would rather see the world through someone who is a few years older (because those few years really change someone's thoughts). THURSDAY: Abraham Lincoln, the day he was murdered: Some people in history believe that he had a premonition that something was going to happen that day, that he had dreams that made him wake up drenched in sweat. I think that seeing that, but still continuing with whatever he was going to do that day, like go to the theatre. Would I see my life differently after going through the process of death? Definitely. And I would want to. Is there really that "life flashing before the eyes?" I would get to see it, and find out. If it is true, then I would see all of Lincoln's life in my eyes. How amazing. Truly amazing. FRIDAY: Mrs. Gypton (my English teacher): She is one of my heroes. Everyday she inspires me to be better at life. I know that sounds cliché, but I really don't mean it to be. She is inspiring, and amazing. I would want to have that feeling where you know you have really changed someone's life. And as a teacher, that's what I would see through her eyes. She is such a positive person to be around, that I would really want to be that person for one day. Even though I try really hard to be a nice, positive person, I know I'm not. So I would want to see how it changes my life. Would I be able to do that when I "get back" to my own life? Hopefully, and that would change everything. SATURDAY: Randy Pausch (author of The Last Lecture): When he realized that he actually did it, that he was able to make all of his childhood dreams come true. Whatever day that was. For those who don't know, Randy Pausch was dying of a terminal illness, but he gave a lecture (he was lecturer at Carnegie Mellon, and he gave his speech called "Really Achieving Your Child Dreams" where he goes through a few of his childhood dreams that he was able to make happen, and it's truly incredible. Anyway, that day, when you realize all that you've accomplished in your life, would be so sad, but amazingly joyous at the same time. I would want to know that feeling, because I doubt that I will ever have a day to reflect on my life, and know that I've done amazing things. I want to feel that. SUNDAY: Shawn Johnson, the day she won her gold medal in the Olympics: I've always looked up to Shawn Johnson, the gymnast, for some time, even writing my final paper in English about how she is an inspiring person. She worked so hard her entire life for that one moment. And for gymnasts, it's a one time thing. Hardly any woman gymnast can go to the Olympics two times in a row, because you "age" faster. But she worked so hard in those days to do well in the Olympics, with the world watching her, and everyone wanted her to win a gold. So when she won the gold on the balance beam, it must have been an amazing feeling. Her entire life led to that one moment. How satisfying would that moment feel like? That one week would completely change my life forever. I would never think the same, I don't think. I would have so much more knowledge, and understanding of everything. I honestly think I would be a better person in going through those moments. I would not be the same at all.

(((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))) Yet another amazing question. Oooooh, I'm looking forward to answer this. MONDAY: Michael Jackson. I've always loved his music and I just think his talent was amazing. There were the rumours of 'Wacko Jacko' but I would love to know how he actually thought. After his traumatizing childhood, he acted in peculiar ways and the media just absorbed it. I'd want to know how he really felt about it and how his childhood really did affect his life. There is no doubt he was always eccentric and a bit 'out there' but I really do think it was because of his brutal past that has made him the way he is, or should I say was. Not many people actually acknowledge the work he has done for charities and the money he's given away but just talk about how 'weird' and 'strange' he was. I'd also like to go into his mind for a day to see how his mind works because he had so many fans and a family and yet he still felt painfully lonely. I'd like to know what that was like. TUESDAY: I would go into the mind of my Dad. I don't really know how his mind works at all and we barely talk. I'd like to know why that is and perhaps being in his mind for 24 hours would give me greater understanding so I could probably get along with him better. I've always said that the reason we don't get along is because we are two completely seperate people so it would be amazingly interesting to see how he really does think. WEDNESDAY: I'd go into the mind of someone who was visually impaired. I'd love to know their thought process and how they would use their other senses to gather information and go along with their day. Same for someone who was deaf. I think it would be not only give me greater respect for people who do get through obstacles in their life but would also be very inspiring and beneficial for myself. THURSDAY: Another famous person: Britney Spears. She was the pop princess and had everything going for her and she turned for the worst. Being in the global spotlight in such a mess would be annoying and frustrating. I'd be interested in how her mind works as well. She's made some bad choices and decisions but it doesn't make her a bad person. I would like to know what made that change in her and how her mind works now. I know everyone was going "What was she thinking?!" when she shaved her head so I'd like to know exactly that. FRIDAY: I'd go back into the mind of Martin Luther King Jr. It is inspiring that so much change can come from just one person. The work and things he has done for civil rights will always be remembered and he is an extremely notable person. On a website, someone said " he has an indescribable capacity for empathy that is the touchstone of leadership. By deed and by preachment, he has stirred in his people a Christian forbearance that nourishes hope and smothers injustice." The world is a better place because of all that he did and to spend a day in his mind would be an absoloute privilege. SATURDAY: Ellen Degeneres! Her thoughts would crack. me. up. Not only is she a hilarious and kind-hearted person she's also done a lot for charity and the LGBT community. It was extremely brave for her to come out like that on the Oprah show.To be in someone that funny and that sweet's mind for a day would be AMAZING. SUNDAY: My last day of the week. I could think of a few people who's mind I would like to venture into but I'm going to have to go with JASON MRAZ. You know why? :) I'd like to see who he loved more in our polygamous relationship or if he secretly had the hots for Christofer Drew or Zac Efron. I l know everyone reading this right now is probably like 'O_o What is this girl on?!' but yeah.. Haha, that's just made my day. :) After having these experiences I would think that I would be a better person after seeing through other people's eyes. I think their stories and struggles would be a constant reminder that everyone has problems and there's a way to get around them and you can end up stronger after them. There are a few people that I have mentioned in my answer that really applies to. :) I would definately not be the same after that experience. (((((((((((((((((((DQ DAMISTY DREW MRAZ EFRON))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Monday: Charles Darwin. One of my favorite historical persons. I am a big fan of evolution [if one can be fan of something like that] and although Darwinism is not always the best expression of evolutionism his mind and travels started it all. I would love to see the world the way he saw it when he was traveling around the Gallapagos and looking at his finches, or any other day while he was thinking/developing On the Origin of Species. I have never had an original thought in my 15 years of life. I have never started anything novel that brakes with everything that has been established. Darwin did and I think that is exciting, powerful and scary. The experience would probably give me more courage to express my ideas, even if they aren't original, and give me a new appreciation for the courage that it takes to start something new even when people fervently oppose you. Tuesday: graffitti artist Banksy. This is a tricky one because I don't know his real name or what exactly is it that he does, thinks, believes or even looks like outisde of what he does with his graffitti. However, I am a huge admirer of his work and if interpret his message/politics/sense of humour correctly then I look up to him as a thinker as well. I don't have the artistic talent that he has or [again] an original discourse to canalize it. I would love to spend a single day in the mind and looking through the eyes of a visual artist, any visual artist. I admire Banksy in particular because of his anonimity. It is totally juvenile but his secretive ways seem exciting. He seems to live a life full of meaning by painting on walls and desacrating public property. I could be wrong but I would love to find out and after that I would keep his secrets for life. Wednesday: a medical doctor. I have no interest on medicine as a career and even if I had it, I am not smart or hard working enough to be med school material, so I will never know what it is like to be on the doctor's side. I only know how to play the role of the patient. I think doctors get a very bad reputation for being unfeeling and sticking for protocol without considering their patient's desires or opinions. Sometimes I agree with this opinion. Doctors and medical staff in general seem too concerned with telling patients what is best for them and how rules must be followed that they don't even remember our names or what our lives look like at the moment. I wonder if they care. I want to believe that they do; that at least some of them are actually passionate about their careers and helping people. I don't know what it is like to juggle with bureaucracy, protocols, budgets and thousands of needy patients everyday. Perhaps if I could see and feel everything a doctor goes through every day of his/her professional life I would be more understanding. Thursday: my brother Jared. Since he came back from Iraq he became an entirely different person. He doesn't want to share what happened, what he saw or did when he was deployed. This would be a tricky decision because most of the time I'm not sure I would like to know what he did or saw in a war zone. I don't know if it would sit well with me to know that my brother did something completely horrible and unforgivable. At the same time, I wish I could understand him more. I have never been in a war zone and I have never seen anyone being killed by gunfire or explosions the way he saw some of his friends die. I would also like to know what his motivations were for even enlisting on the army. He has told me many times that he died it for patriotism and a sense of duty. I know what those words mean in the dictionary but I don't "feel" them, they are not part of "me". A day inside his head would explain many, many things to me that I don't comprehend about soldiers, about war, and about violence. Hopefully we could also be better friends. Friday: my mother. Sometimes I think I let resentment get the best of me when judging my mother. I know it's wrong and I hope that someday I have the wisdom to change this. One day of looking at life through her eyes would explain so many things that she cannot verbalize or simply won't share with me. I already have a lot of compassion for her and her problems. She has a hard life and although for the most part she is responsible for the problems she deals with, she is a lonely person. If I could feel that loneliness and despair for only one day and interpret things the way she does I am sure I would never forget it. Then the next time she did something hurtful or selfish that directly affects me I would remember being her and have an easier time forgiving her and being the bigger person. I could even get closer to her, since I would have better words and more understanding of the situation. Saturday: a person living with severe cerebral palsy. I know this sounds very wrong but I have always been curious and scared of what many people with cerebral palsy go though everyday. Many of them have ordained thoughts, their emotions and ideas are completely normal but their physical and neurological state don't allow them to communicate and their bodies do not obey them. To a degree I can understand the bodily part but I've been lucky enough to be able to talk, to communicate and connect with other people around me because my brain permits me to. I wonder what a person who is mostly confined to his/her own thoughts and can understand everything thinks of the outside world that often dismisses them as unintelligent and unable to comprehend. This might sound like a stretch but I believe that if you are quiet and yet hear everything, and if you can see many things but cannot discuss them verbally, you will have insightful thoughts and have a profoundly different appreciation/perception of reality. I could be wrong, but if I could spend a day figuring that out I would. Sunday: Gautama Buddha. Can we say pretentious? yes we can! Out of all the famous thinkers who inspired religions [could be debated if Buddhism is a religion at all. I just say religion because it is convinient] this is the only person whose life and teachings I find the most intriguing and admirable. To be completely honest I haven't read much about Buddhism but I did read books about Siddhartha, biographies of sorts on how he went from being a prince to being enlightened. His spiritual and intellectual path seems fascinating and radical. I would love to discover what he thought and saw in the world for one single day. It would probably be enough to give me a valuable perspective on life and on being alive. ***My runner up was Theodor Geisel, Dr. Seuss. He was my first favorite writer. I still like his work and I would love to be able to write clever verses even for a single day. Too bad the week is so short.
Troy
Sunday: Adolf Eichmann (not to sound morbid) Monday: My older sister Tuesday: FDR Wednesday: W B Yeats Thursday: Abdul-hamid Kishk Friday: Santiago Ramón y Cajal (or any other neuroscientist) Saturday: Aisha bint al-Siddiq I'm sure it was simply an accident, but you forgot about leap weeks; weeks with the eighth day, Zetzday. I'd choose Dr Seuss for that one. I'll give a reason for each when I have more time :)

I saw your question earlier, but I had to really think about it for a few hours to see who I would want to be for a day of a week, great to have questions like this! Here are my picks: Sunday: An African slave captured from his homeland, and the Middle Passage I would want to experience that, to bring back that memory and share it with others, so that people would not think so lightly of that part of history Monday: Jane Austen Would love to see how this young, inexperienced woman, trapped in a society with little opportunity for women to advance or live up to their potential, overcame all of that to write books that still move people today, in a world so different from the one she knew. Tuesday: Neil Armstrong To be able to see what it was like to walk on the moon and look at Earth from outer space, it must have been one of the most moving experiences anyone has ever had. Wednesday: Jacques Cousteau To explore the ocean, and dive to the deepest depths humanly possible, to see all the beautiful and strange creatures there Thursday: Leonardo Di Vinci the day he painted the Mona Lisa Curious to see just who inspired that enigmatic expression, who is she? Or is it him? Friday: Jesus Christ The greatest man who ever lived. What was it like for him, and to hear him speak, teach, guide Saturday: Maya Angelou I admire her very much, to see what it is like to live her life, she has had such a full life, to hear some words of wisdom from her. These are my picks.

Jesus with sick people Bill Gates Oprah Winfrey Malcolm X at mecca Solomon when he made decisions David when he spoke to God Prince seeing the world through the eyes of Jesus, will give me a complete picture. I would have a deeper understanding of things that people are very confused about now- who he really is, all that he truly accomplished. the lies, the truths- all before me. His name did not go down in history for nothing. To be in the mind of a genius like Bill Gates only means I walk away with a ridiculuos business mind- that is quite untouchable. Oprah- I would see how she did it- she gains trust, she's dominates Malcolm X at mecca- this experience was so pure- I would want to feel that type of energy. like veils came off his eyes Solomon- wisest King to ever live- I want to see how he thought. David- because he was so close to the Creator (yes, i believe in one) despite his issues. he was very human- yet loved God on another level. reminds me of myself- i would want to understand this connection Prince- because he is a ridiculuos talent, that I covet I think I would walk away a person with too much understanding of the world if I combined all these - to be honest.

Gosh that sounds creepy but i swear I'm not trying to be! I just think it would be neat to be in your mind and come up with stuff like this question!!!!!!
