What are limitations of using a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer when testing athletes for drugs?

Give pros, cons or limitations of using a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer when testing athletes for drugs?

  • Answer:

GC can tell you percent composition in your sample, but nothing else, and Mass Spec will tell you the masses of compounds in your sample, but it will be useless because of the amount of other crap in the blood sample that will make it too dirty to garner anything from it. Mass Spec is only a good tool if you have some semblance of purity before you test it.

The first person gave an incorrect argument. GC/MS is very usefully and is used to detect THC during drug tests. The other things in the blood will be filtered out before the test. When testing of steroid use the tester will specifically isolate any possible known drugs from the blood sample then GC/MS the sample which will give an exact mass and percent composition. This will prove the presence of drugs in the system. The process is complicated and expensive and not every lab has a GC/MS machine.
