Under what conditions does Hexavalent CrOx form on NiChrome?

  • If I have nichrome metal (80:20 Ni:Cr) in the work environment, do I (or under what conditions do I) need to be worrying about forming Cr(VI)?

  • Answer:

Most probably in the presence of a very oxidizing agent. Under normal circumstances, Cr is not very sensible to oxidation (not even to Cr2O3)

Other answers

You would need a VERY strong oxidizer to form CrO3 - chromium VI is a very strong oxidizer itself, so you would need an even stronger one to oxidize the chromium from zero to six. One of the reasons chromium is added to metal alloys is it's resistance to oxidation (corrosion) - unless you work in a very extreme environment (hot acid fumes) you will be fine.
