Is it true tat they can make ethnanol from sugar cane?

Why don't we use sugar beets to make ethanol like Brazil uses cane?

  • So many tons of beets are left in the fields each year. It's such a waste! If they (Brazil) can make ethanol out of sugar cane , why can't we use sugar beets? Is our technology so far behind them?

  • Answer:

Probably because corn farmers have more money to pay for lobbyists in DC than beet farmers.

my my aren't we a cynical bunch. the reason we don't use beets is because there's not infrastructure to process them to ethanol. Also even though you see tons of beets in the fields they are not sugar beets. In the US there are not a lot of sugar beets grown (check the USDA statistics) because its too expensive to process them (even to sugar). Cheaper to import the sugar.
