  • You have to prepare a pH 3.50 buffer, and you have the following .10M solutions available: HCHO2, HC2H3O2, H3PO4, NaCHO2, NaC2H3O2, and NaH2PO4. Which solutions would you use? How many milliliters of each solution would you use to make approximately a liter of the buffer?

  • Answer:

    Ka of HCH2O = 1.8 x 10^-4 pKa = - log Ka = 3.74 3.50 = 3.74 + log [CHO2-] / [HCO2H] 10^-0.24 =0.575 = [CHO2-] / [HCO2H] they have tha same concentration so we use 0.575 L of CHO2- and 1.0 L of HCO2H
