Is oxygen gas an element or a molecule?
-
is oxygen gas an element or molecule. i am thinking it is a molecule, not an element, mixture or compound. mixture is obvious, not a compound cause it only has one atom in it, and it isnt an element cause it can br broken down. (eg heating Hg in presence of oxygen gas causes HgO to form....oxygen atoms have been seperated) but i have found many sources saying that oxygen/nitrogen gas are elements but i cant see how. how can O and O2 be elements so can someone explain thx

Answer:
O (oxygen) is an element O2 is a molecule oxygen in air found as O2 as a molecule. so the natural form of the oxygen is O2 a molecule but if u talk about the oxygen in a molecule such as H2O the O in this molecule is an element.

You are right, oxygen gas is a molecule. You must be careful and specific when using terms such as oxygen because it can refer to different things. Oxygen gas (O2) is a molecule, whereas the oxygen atom (O) is an element.

I have been taught that oxygen is a molecule. For every molecule of oxygen metabolized we get 36 molecules of adenosinetriphosphate, which is pure energy. we sometimes ask where kids get all that energy. It's because they have not lived long enough to screw up their lungs.

Oxygen, O2, is a colourless odourless gaseous main group element which belong to Group VIb of the periodic table. Atomic Number : 8 Atomic Mass : 15.9994 Melting Point : -214 degC Boiling Point : -183 degC Density : 1.429 Atmospheric oxygen is of vital importance for all aerobic organisms. For industrial purposes, oxygen is obtained by fractional distillation of liquid air. It is used in metallurgical processes, in high-temperature flames and in breathing apparatus.

Oxygen is a type of element. An element can be in the form of atom ( a single unit of the element ) or molecule ( two or mole atoms joined together to form a more stable form). In the case of oxygen, the atomic form O is not stable, so in the air we always find two atoms of oxygen bonded together ( O-O or O with a subscript 2, )in the case of ozone , three atoms of oxygen are bonded together ( O -O -O or O with a subscript 3).

Free Oxygen is both a molecule and an element. Oxygen is atomic number #8 on the periodic table making it an element. Oxygen, when by itself, is a diatomic molecule, O2.

well i think it is an element as we can survive on it so there
