How do you do metric conversions?

I'm just now learning metric conversions for the first time... HELP!?

  • I'm in tenth grade now and I've never actually learned metric conversions. My honors chem teacher is completely zooming through our stuff and I'm trying to teach myself conversions. We use g, mg, kg, ml, L, cm, and m. I need to know how to convert m to km, kg to g, ml to L etc etc. Is there any way to remember the conversions easily? Like, I get confused when I'm trying to remember which unit is larger than the other one. Thanks!

  • Answer:

    It's all in the name. Milli is divided by 1000, centi is divided by 100, so a millimeter is a meter divided by 1000, a centimeter is a meter divided by 100 . A kilo is multiplied by 1000, so a kilogram is a gram multiplied by 1000, and a kilometer is a meter multiplied by 1000. 1000 grams = 1 kilogram 1000 kilograms = 1 tonne 1000 milliliters = 1 liter 10 millimeters = 1 centimeter 100 centimeters = 1 meter 1000 millimeters = 1 meter 1000 meters = 1 kilometer Hope this helps you.

just keep the list next to you and review it. you can't lean a poem or anything like that

the metric system is waaay easier than english system I'll tell you that. g, mg, and kg deal with mass. ml, L, deal with volume. cm and m, and mm deal with length. 10 m = 1,000 cm 1kg = 1,000 g

there are one thousand ml in one l, one million ml in kl, one thousand l in kl, just remember going one at a time multiply it by ten

Memorize Kilo means 1000 if kilo means 1000 then milli means 1/1000 micro sounds very small and it is 1/1,000,000 try these- 1 gram = ? milligrams (milli is small so there will be more mg than grams. The answer is 1000 mg) 1 gram = ? kg (kilo- is large so there will be less kg than grams. The answer is 0.001 (1/1,000 of a kilogram) make a list and keep reviewing it.

in general, the metric system goes by multiples of 1000. examples 1000 mm = 1 m , and 1000 m = 1 km 1000 ml = 1 L, and 1000 L = 1 kL 1000 mg = 1 gram , and 1000 g = 1 kg there are exceptions. 100 cm = 1 m you just need experience here's a link to a list.... http://dbhs.wvusd.k12.ca.us/webdocs/Metric/Metric-Prefixes.html

Its all about the prefixes kid. The base unit has no prefix so its a meter, gram or liter. On the plus side the common prefixes are kilo (X100) and Mega (x1,000,000), so a thousand Kg is 1Mg. For values less than 1 the common prefixes are deci (1/10), centi (1/100), milli (1/1000), micro (1/1,000,000). If you are going to be studying spectroscopy you might also see nano and pico prefixes. When you make conversions the only thing that you have to do is to move the decimal place. So, 10 cm is 0.1m is 10,000 mm. Once you start thinking in terms of the prefixes it is easy.

grams- weight liters- volume meters- distance just memorize SI prefixes and the rest will be easy. I'll start with numbers smaller than 1. deci- .1 (10^-1) 10 decimeters in a meter. centi- .01 (10^-2) 100 cm in a m milli- .001 (10^-3) 1000 mm in a m micro- .000001 (10^-6) 1,000,000 µm in a m nano- 10^-9 1,000,000,000 nm in a m pico- 10^-12 1,000,000,000,000 pm in a m femto- 10^-15 atto- 10^-18 zepto- 10^-21 yocto- 10^-24 You will mostly use centi, milli, micro, nano, and pico so know those down pat. Now to go for numbers greater than 1. deca- 10 hecto- 100 kilo- 1000 (1000 meters/grams in a kilometer/kilogram) mega- 10^6 (one million) giga- 10^9 (one billion) tera- 10^12 (one trillion) peta- 10^15 exa- 10^18 zeta- 10^21 yotta- 10^24 you'll mostly use kilo for this one but it doesn't hurt to know these ones either. Yeah, your computer speed and hard drive space uses these units as well. There's nothing you can do except straight up memorize them. I wish I had a pneumonic, but you'll see them so often that it is very easy to remember them all.
