Is it dangerous if I make my thermometer explode?

I was just doing a science experiment and my thermometer popped. I put the three themometers into sepeerate soup cans containing boiling water. Not a good idea. Then they popped and leaked. I put them outside. was a cheapy one from the dollar store so I don't think its dangerous. BUT it released a wierd metal smell into the air. What should I do?

ummm the stuff that are in thermometers is probably a metal called mercury... if u smell it... i would ventilate ur house ASAP and get rid of the thermometers ASAP!!!! i think it is possible to get mercury poisoning from this... long exposures to the vapors can cause lots of harm to ur body!!!... But then again i can be wrong... but better safe then sorry!

If it is a mercury thermometer, that is bad, Mercury is toxic and should only be disposed of properly. If you got any on your hands rinse, and rinse well. If it popped at around 100 degrees (celsius) though then its probably not a mercury one.. I dont know if mercury has a smell or not though..

You'll be fine. Even if it was a mercury thermometer it wouldn't have hurt you as long as you didn't play with the contents of it. The biggest risk is that it could burst and send glass flying.

Very few modern thermometers have mercury, if the liquid inside was red, it wasn't mercury, so there's no problem.

it probably is since a thermometer has mercury in it, so i wouldn't suggest you do that.
