How to do this chemistry problem with gases?

Chemistry, Characteristics of Gases Problem? Help Please?

  • The pressure on top of Mount Everest averages about 235 mm Hg. Convert this pressure to inches of mercury. (Hint: 760mmHg = 29.92 inches Hg) Please tell me HOW, not simply the answer, Thank you so much! I did this, multiplied 235mm Hg times 760mm Hg, and divided it by 29.92in Hg, but got something way off the actual answer, 5969.25... IDK what I did wrong!?

  • Answer:

(Quantity to convert) x (conversion factor) = new quantity pressure in inches Hg = 235 mm Hg(29.92 in Hg)/(760 mm Hg) = 9.25 in Hg You did just the opposite of what I have shown. I don't know how you got the answer 5969.25 but that is really not correct. Just think of this. 1 in = 25.4 mm so the answer must be much less than 235 mm Hg. Hope this is helpful to you. JIL HIR
