What is the molar mass of hemoglobin?

Why is the molar mass equal to the relative atomic mass?

  • "Atomic mass", by definition, is the average mass of ONE ATOM of an element as compared to the mass of 1/12 of an atom of carbon-12. "Molecular mass", by definition, is the average mass of ONE MOLECULE of an element or compound as compared to the mass of 1/12 of an atom of carbon-12.(it's a ratio with no units) And "Molar mass", by definition, is the mass of ONE MOLE of atoms of an element. (or) the mass of 6 * 10^23 atoms of an element(unit: kg). Therefore, How is ONE MOLE of atoms of an element the same as 'the average mass of ONE ATOM of an element as compared to the mass of 1/12 of an atom of carbon-12'?

  • Answer:

well, they are not equal consider something weighing 1 ounce per unit one pound of this will have 16 units then consider something weighing 5 ounces per unit 5 pounds of this will have 16 units see how the number of units is related to the weight per unit? consider an element with an average atomic mass of 12.01 amu per atom (carbon) 12.01 grams of this carbon has 6.022E23 units consider an element with an average atomic mass of 24.03 amu per atom (magnesium) 24.03 grams of this magnesium has 6.022E23 atoms atomic mass and molar mass share the same number but different units molar mass is just a way of counting out large numbers of atoms by weighing a sample and using the same numerical value is simply convenient - easy to look up

you cannot equate atomic mass and molar mass. it'll be dimensionally incorrect. say X is the atomic mass of an element. it is found that X grams of the element has Avagadro no. of atoms (for every element). since avagadro no. of species constitutes a mole, the value is called Molar mass. Atomic mass and molar mass are only numerically equal.
