How do I calculate the volume of a gas?

How do i calculate volume of gas of x mol at stp?

  • i don't understand this chemistry question! it says calculate the volume of gas you would expect to be evolved if X mol of magnesium were reacted with an excess of HCL at standard conditions (STP) also the balanced equation is Mg + 2HCl --> MgCl2 + H2 and the mol ration is 1 to 1 anyone want to explain how to do this not just say the answer? thank you

  • Answer:

You really stated the answer in your question - you said there is a 1:1 ratio of Mg to H2 gas and that X moles of Mg was reacted. The answer is that X moles of H2 will be produced. And by definition of molar gas volume, the volume of 1 mole of any gas at STP is 22.4-L. So the answer is 22.4-L times X moles.

Other answers

The volume of any gas at STP is 22.4 liters So the ratio of volume in liters to 22.4 is the number of moles
