Is buffer capacity constant?

Why does a buffer with the higher concentration have a greater buffering capacity than a lower concentration?

  • buffer?

  • Answer:

A buffer works because it has a weak acid to neutralize any added strong base, and it has a weak base (conjugate base of the weak acid) to neutralize any added strong acid. The greater the concentration of weak acid and weak base (i.e. the greater the buffer concentration), the more added acid and base it can neutralize.
