Degrees of Freedom for Water Vapor?
-
List all the degrees of freedom for a molecule of water vapor, taking the various ways in which it can vibrate into account.
-
Answer:
If you have n particles in a molecule, and each of these has three coordinates (x, y, z), it follows that there are a total of 3n degrees of freedom. Any gas molecule has three translational degrees of freedom. Any nonlinear molecule has three rotational degrees of freedom (rotation around any of three mutually perpendicular axes). That leaves 3 degrees of vibrational freedom. See if you can work out what they are.
