Is fire possible without life?

What are the implications/effects of oil spill to aquatic life, possible oil fire and clean-up operation?

  • oil spill is not new to the public. given that the density of petroleun-based oil is approximately 0.9 g/mL and the dnsity of the water is 1.0 g/mL. dicuss the implications this has to aquatic life, possible oil fire and clean-up operation? Please help me answer this.. Thank you so much.. and God BLess!

  • Answer:

Oil spills are a huge problem when they happen. Because it floats, it blocks out sunlight, largely affecting all life that depends on the sunlight...that is every living thing near the surface of the water. Phytoplankton, and seaweed-two sources of food that the entire food chain are dependent on-die when they don't have sunlight, thereby starving the life under the oil spill. Not only this, but anything on the surface is contaminated. Any food that happens to float to the surface gets eaten. That contaminated food will kill the animal. It is not only this that the spill will effect. The life above the water will be harmed as well. The sea birds die when they are covered in oil for two reasons. One, they sink because their wings, covered in oil, fail to capture enough air to float, and, two, because they sicken and kill themselves when they attempt to clean their contaminated feathers with their mouth. The oil will also effect the larger mammals in the water. It covers the blow holes of killer whales, driving them to near extinction, and attatches to the fur of otters and other animals with fur or feathers, much like the birds. It will freeze the animals because it soaks the fur, destroying the protective coat, like if your snow jacket were soaked from the inside out. It offers no protection and the animals die. It is truly an awful sight. Oil fires are actually less of a threat, the main problem being that they are extremely hard to put out because oil floats on water, and spraying anything else could have effects on the wildlife. Still, they cause a small threat next to the oil itself. Lastly, on clean up, there are many forms of clean up, though none completely work. First, biological agents can degrade the oil and speed up the rate at which it becomes harmless-kind of like when dish soap dissolves oil on your kitchen plate. Second, skimmers wipe the surface and swipe the oil off the top, since it floats. Lastly, it is cleaned with high power hoses, spraying the oil from beaches and animals. Oh! did I mention the harm it could do to the beach? Oil will literally turn a beach pitch black. I know of a beach in California that was hit by an oil spill. Its residence were forced to move as all business was swept away. No one wanted to go to the beach. Not only that, but it killed beach life-baby sea turtles, crabs, oysters, you name it. All dead. Extensive clean up was made, but it was never exactly the same ever again. Oil spills are extremely dangerous, and I hope this was useful to you and maybe taught you about oil spills.
