How do I calculate the volume of a gas?

Calculate the volume of the nitrogen gas at STP.?

  • Hello! I thought this question on Yahoo! Answers might be interesting to you. i need help with this question it is from the new york state exam for chemistry: when the air bag inflates, the nitrogen gas is at a pressure of 1.3 atmosperes, a temperature of 301 K, and has a volume of 40.0 liters. Calculate the volume of the nitrogen gas at STP. Your response must include both a correct numerical setup and the calculated volume.

  • Answer:

i couldn't do it when i was in chemistry and i still can't do it nor do i want to

Let's assume that this is an ideal gas situation. Using PV=nRT and plugging in the correct values: P for pressure (in atm), V for volume, R as the univ. gas constant (0.08206 L atm/ mol K) and T for Temp (in K) figure out how many moles of Nitrogen gas you have. Take the moles you have and replug them into PV=nRT using STP conditions and your mole value. This should give you your volume in Liters. HOpe this helps

What the reaction 2NaN3---------> 2Na + 3N2 means in moles is that two moles of NaN3 produce two moles of Na and three moels of N2. But you don't need to calculate the number of moles. Using the equation of P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2 you can correct for what the volumes would be at STP. P1=1.3 atm. V1 = 40.0 liters. T1= 301K. P2 will be 1 atm (standard pressure). T2 will be 273.16K (standard temperature). Plug those values in and you can solve for V2, the volume at STP. Simple.

Alan Turing

P1V1/T1=P2V2/T2 V1=P2V2T1/P1T2
