What's the difference between regular detergent and a high efficiency detergent (powder)?

Unfortunately, regular laundry powder detergent and high efficiency laundry powder detergent are both marketing terms, not chemical ones, and as such, have been devalued by their useage so as to mean nothing at all. Much as the Red Queen in "Alice in Wonderland", marketing people can make these words...and words like pure and clean...mean anything they want them to mean. Unfortunately, this doesn't translate well for either chemists or ordinary people.
