Why don't effervescent aspirin tablets hurt your stomach if they hydrolyse in water to Salicylic acid anyway?
-
Salicylic acid hurts your stomach so they added the acetyl group to make acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin). This solved the problem. If the acetylsalicylic acid in effervescent aspirin tablets hydrolyzes into salicylic acid when the tablet is dissolved into water anyway, then how does the stuff not hurt you stomach? isnt adding the acetyl group useless if it just hydrolyzes back?

Answer:
The hydrolysis reaction rate is very slow - dissolving in water & consuming with several minutes makes no detectable difference to salicylic acid levels.
