How does super glue work?

How do you remove super glue? (acetone did not work.)?

  • I have a plastic wheel glued to a metal axel, so the wheel will not turn. I tried soaking it in acetone nail polish remover, but it has been about an hour, and it still wont move. I would buy super glue remover, but I read that it is just acetone. Any suggestions?

  • Answer:

Depending on the plastic piece, when you added the acetone to get rid of the super glue, you may have softened the plastic enough that it is not the plastic that is "glued" to the metal, it is the plastic itself that has bonded to the metal. The super glue may also have caused the softening. You may have also shrunk the hole in the plastic piece and it is stuck for lfe. You may just be out of luck. Keep trying the nail polish remover. You can get full strength acetone at many hardware stores if you want to try it.

you might be able to just buy acetone. not all nail polish removers have acetone in them. but be careful because acetone can dissolve plastic as well

I once almost glued my 5 fingers with super glue and it took me 3 hours to get my fingers free. I used paint thinner. However, the glue remnants were still on my fingers for about 2 days before all was gone. I do not know if this would work on the plastic wheel and metal axle. The paint thinner might ''melt'' the plastic.

Super glue is poly(ethylcyanoacrylate). It is VERY soluble in acetone. If you tried to use acetone and it didn't work - then someone must have filled the bottle labeled acetone with something else. Some nail polished don't contain acetone, they use ethyl acetate - that won't work. You need ACETONE.

super glue is not meant to twist or bend, if not to severe, try bending plastic wheel a little in each direction, and twist /rotate in nudging motion, if not able yet, acetone may work , but will melt some plastics as well, also if not attached to anything else, soak in hot water, to expand metal, and crack glue bond, ..

A lot of nail polish removers no longer contain acetone, or use it in a lower concentration to reduce the odor. Make sure you have the real high-potency stuff.
