Is Oxygen Gas (O2) an element?

    YES. What you read is correct. Oxygen atoms are unstable on their own and therefore travel in pairs. O = unstable O-O = stable But as it has no other element in it (what the letters represent) it is itself an element. (For example H2O is a molecule but not an element. O2 is both)

No, Oxygen on its own (O) is the element. Technically, in the atmosphere it is always diatomic (O2), and although this is just a compound of the original element, it is still a compound.

why do people think O by itself exits ? its a radical therefore not in element form. O2 is oxygen in its elemental form !
