  Potassium permanganate is sold for water filters - it oxidizes iron and manganese dissolved in water to insoluble salts. Its availability for this use depends on local water conditions - if iron is a problem in Melbourne, it might be available at local hardware stores. Sodium acetate can be made yourself - just react vinegar (use the distilled white kind so it is as close as possible to pure acetic acid solution) with baking soda (sodium hydrogen carbonate) and boil the resulting solution to remove residual CO2 and crystallize out the sodium acetate. Be careful not to overheat it - the crystals can partially decompose and turn brown (this could have been from an impurity in the vinegar). CH3COOH + NaHCO3 ----> CH3COONa + H2O + CO2
