Exceptions to the Octet Rule. Draw the structure of XeH4?
-
The question asks to draw the structure of XeH4. It has to deal with an exception to the octet rule. It wants us to draw the molecule by placing atoms on the grid and connecting them with bonds and to show all lone pairs of electrons. can anyone help?
-
Answer:
Xe comes in with 8 valence electrons and each hydrogen comes in with 1 valence electron .Sooo you have Xe in the middle with each of the 4 hydrogen connected to Xe with a single bond. Then you have 2 lone pairs of electrons on Xe that will add to 12 electrons. It is an exception to the octet because octet means 8 electrons and Xe has 12 electrons.
